I don't remember any specific camera shots of the crowds when I was watching Reagan on TV (I was a kid back then). But Reagan did carry FORTY-NINE states, so in the 1984 election I imagine his crowds must have been biblical.
I was a teenager in the 80s. I had such complete trust in Reagan that I mostly ignored politics while he was in office. I just figured he could handle whatever was going on. The atmosphere in the country was such an improvement over Ford and Carter it felt like an eight year continual party.
Upon close inspection, and with full knowledge of some of the more nefarious "goings on" during the Reagan years, his Presidency definitely was not all that I grew up thinking it was.
I doubt that any of them really are.
However, I think it would be extremely interesting to know how many of some of these deeds were "administration" vs. "presidential". Although the buck stops with the President, it would be interesting to know how many "disasters" of the past were actually the result presidential action as opposed to some stupid underling making an error or a decision out of their pay grade.
Washington was loved like that. Jackson too I think. The guy on the twenty dollar bill. For now.
Franklin Roosevelt was, too, believe it or not. Nobody's alive anymore to tell you from personal experience.
Lincoln too probably.
There may have been a few others but I don't know about them.
But yeah.
I get your point and you are right.
The Presidents you listed, plus possibly Reagan.

Military kid from the 80s here. They loved Reagan.
He did not carry Minnesota. Minnesota always has to be weird.
Sorry but Reagan was a douchebag. No other president can compare to our President today. Trump is the shit!!!!

What about the call boy scandal during Reagan's term? And his response to thr the AIDS epidemic. He was a prick.
