"We know that wearing a mask outside health care facilities offers little, if any, protection from infection. "

Thanks for digging up supporting studies.

NEJM is the authoritative medical science journal for the USA.

Or maybe WAS - until the progressives find out about this...

i'm dropping this link on all the FB health experts in my feed, prefaced with the question, "are the contributors to the NEJM conspiracy theorists now too?"

slaphappy2 9 points ago +9 / -0

But, but, but...progressives are just so science-based ! Not like us Bible-reading neanderthal conservatives who believe in the fantasy of only two genders instead of 64 ! /s

fwiw, i think this NEJM link deserves its own post.

I live in NYC surrounded by SJW NPCs who always wear masks outside. ( I never do - I only wear them in places where I risk fines for non-compliance ).

I tell them about the science when they bring the topic up - they don't want to hear it.

DiamondJoeQuimby 4 points ago +4 / -0

exactly, they've already got so much virtue-signalling and social capital invested in Scamdemic that they can't turn back now; they'd have to admit a lot of things, about themselves, but mostly they'd have to cop to being conned, which most people are unwilling to do. So it's just easier for them to dismiss you and fall back on tHe cDc iS cOmPrOmiSeD, biGoT.

slaphappy2 3 points ago +3 / -0

Clearly, the NEJM has been compromised by evil right-wingers, televangelists and incestuous NRA supporters from Alabama !

don't forget the mouth-breathing bitter clingers at the CDC too, bigot.

"There is limited evidence for their effectiveness in preventing influenza virus transmission either when worn by the infected person for source control or when worn by uninfected persons to reduce exposure. Our systematic review found no significant effect of face masks on transmission of laboratory-confirmed influenza."

Which is a position they haven't really changed on. Public mask use are more to stop what's coming out of your month, not what's coming in.

Surgeons aren't wearing masks to protect themselves from their patients. It's to protect their patients from any type of contamination they breath.

Yep Yep! It's the handwashing that is most key. Once your mask is contaminated if not removed and thrown away worn all day. You will touch it without even realizing then touch your mucous membranes and catch the very thing you were avoiding. If you think you are the king of control and won't touch your mouth eyes nose. Think again even the most conscious people will touch there face multiple times a day then tell you they never touch their face. Science shows that the average person can touch their face 2000 to 3000 times in a day.

11
amethystzephyr [S] 11 points ago +11 / -0

Not to mention the constant dragging of the mask down to the neck or chin, and lifting the mask back up to cover the face. Do these people earnestly believe they are providing a sterile environment?

weren't people encouraged to wear masks during the Spanish flu as well but many people still got sick?

JeremiahKassin 4 points ago +4 / -0

And then, when they saw their elected representatives not abiding by mask ordinances, they took them off. People were a lot smarter back then.

Yup.

Libs will distinguish based on this being influenza and not a coronavirus. Not sure if this is a material difference, but it will be seized upon

7
amethystzephyr [S] 7 points ago +7 / -0

Libs will grasp any straw to support their foregone conclusion.

Fremium2020 7 points ago +7 / -0

Be careful because their is no box around the whole paragraph where it is talking about "disposable medical masks" or "Surgical masks", which were never designed for that purpose.

Here is what I have been sending to anyone interested. Great break down of the science, tons of studies linked. https://www.sott.net/article/434796-The-Science-is-Conclusive-Masks-and-Respirators-do-NOT-Prevent-Transmission-of-Viruses

Masks are extremely effective, for advertising and promotion of the idea that a plague is taking place.

yeah, i'm trying to enlighten a friend of mine about this very topic; but since he's from the cannabis dome of Santa Cruz, CA, he's got his mind made up and i'd bet my mortgage payment that he didn't bother reading any of what i sent him.

yeah, that's a certainty... i'm mostly tossing the bait out there because i'm waiting for these stoners to start disparaging the validity of articles published in the NEJM and findings by the CDC.

right on, man... on one hand, i feel like it's a waste of my time and energy; but OTOH, if i can get even one of them to question everything they've been programmed to digest without skepticism then it's a worthwhile pursuit.

I was bitching about masks on twatter and some commie who claimed to be a nurse for 30 years tried to challenge me...i sent them links of numerous studies and all they could say was..."lol have any research done in america?" This is the stupidity we face

2
Sl0re10 2 points ago +2 / -0

I wear glasses. They constantly fog up with these hospital type masks. Obvious my breathing is going around the mask not through it. Does nothing to stop viruses.

0
Highfyingcrow 0 points ago +1 / -1

That's the point. It stops your your breath from shooting out as a high pressure jet in a cone line area in front of you.

Instead it stays around you and reduces the pressure gradient outside the mask.

Would you be comfortable with surgeons working on you without a mask on? Why is this different?

4
Sl0re10 4 points ago +4 / -0

It doesnt do anything with viruses period.

2
E30_Pepe 2 points ago +2 / -0

This science on masks should be posted on every related thread on here. This is the U. of Minnesota center for disease research.

https://www.cidrap.umn.edu/news-perspective/2020/04/commentary-masks-all-covid-19-not-based-sound-data

My summary... The new research claiming masks do any good against viruses is flawed. We have a hundred years of actual research showing that masks for viruses don't work at best and harm at worst. Oh, and we're putting in here that we support mask mandates (of the masks that we also say are ineffective) so we don't get protested and we are sponsored by 3m.

Wait, was this just bad data or is this when they were intentionally lying to ensure healthcare providers had enough medical-grade masks available? Hard to keep track.

1
Highfyingcrow 1 point ago +1 / -0

I guess surgeons don't have to wear masks when doing surgery then.

On a more serious note, masks stop droplets. It stops people sneeze and cough emitted droplets from being expelled.

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0021850220301063

The flow resistance of the mask greatly limits the spread of viruses in the room. This significantly reduces the risk of infection in the vicinity of an infected person (protection of third parties).

E30_Pepe 1 point ago +1 / -0

Surgical masks are effective for bacteria (a large concern in hospitals) not viruses. This is precisely why they have never been recommended for flu like viruses. This study you cited is the type of scientifically poor study the University of Minnesota talked about.
