When I was in Marine Corps boot camp everyone had to go to some religious service in sundays, it didn't matter, i remember 1 recruit objecting because his religion wasn't available. When asked what religion he was he says Native American spiritual beliefs (or something like that). Drill instructors told him he'd better find something else and had him go to protestant services. He later went to the Hindu services. This was 1997.
This was similar in the Air Force a lot more recently, but it was mostly because the instructors just wanted to fucking get rid of everyone for a few hours on Sunday so they could catch up on other things or catch some extra sleep. If anyone stayed behind, they would have had to monitor them.

What's interesting is that a lot of that growth is happening in Africa and it is Catholic. The evangelicals and Pentecostals I agree are more Christian than mainline protestant denominations and liberal Catholics. And in fact a lot of their growth is happening in traditionally Catholic areas like South America where the church has been heavily infiltrated by communists.
And in fact I actually expect the Catholic Church to get smaller in the coming years, outside of Africa and other poor countries at least. But it will become firmer. I go to a InterDenominational church with a membership in the several thousand where we hold several services over a typical weekend. A great mixture of young & old, black, brown, & white. We do not water down our belief in the acceptance of Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior where he died on the cross for our sins and arose for our redemption.

No abortion is still an automatic excommunication as are certain other sins. This typically means that you have to go to the bishop to be reinstated into the church after confessing it. However in some places where abortion is very common, the Bishops granted local priests permission to absolve women who had abortions of their sins and bring them back into communion without them having to make a special petition. The pope then temporarily granted this power to all priests in the church.
So it's not a change in Dogma, the church and particularly the pope gets to decide who gets excommunicated and when and they got to decide when people get back in.
Meanwhile most of the mainline Protestant churches in America have gay female Bishops at this point. Honestly it's a non denominational churches that are more Christian now, together with the Orthodox and the traditional breeds of Catholics.
And yeah the Orthodox are pretty firm because of their traditionalism oh, they still have all the sacraments and Apostolic succession. So they won't collapse, but even some of them are going towards female priests and it's only a matter of time before they do gay marriage too.

And a priest is required in order to commemorate the Mass. You can’t just sit in a circle and sing Christian songs. And you can’t just get a good public speaker to say things about Jesus. You have to have a priest there that is ordained by the church.
Only an ordained priest can administer Last Rights. There are only two sacraments in the RCC that a priest isn't needed for: Baptism and Marriage. However, the RCC to record the Baptism or marriage, a conditional baptism and a blessing of the marriage has to be done by the priest. For instance, I was born at 21 weeks so a nurse baptized me because I was at risk baby but later, a priest did the ceremony and the conditional Baptism in case i wasn't baptized properly. The conditional baptism is the one the RCC records. Not the one done by the Nurse.
I'm a Protestant and even I know that Catholicism is more than just some fancy beads and crossing yourselves.
I have disagreements with Catholicism but I take that to Scripture and think it needs further study and spiritual debate and I'm not one to claim that Roman Catholics don't have a different form of worship than any other denomination.

The number of Catholic priests in the US has plummeted. They barely have enough to staff the parishes. As such, permission to serve in the Chaplain Corps full-time is much more judiciously granted than it was say 30 years ago.
I can grok that. The priest for our little country parish (64 souls total) actually serves in ours, and runs another parish in another small town on his way to us from his rectory in Portland. Way out beyond both towns is a mostly abandoned parish that last saw Mass in 1970-something (I know because I drag a mower out to it once in awhile to keep the grass semi-tamed, and to ensure nobody has broken into it. A few folks gather to do a novena on the lawn there once a year or so, so that nobody runs into tax trouble against the state over it.)
100 years ago all three parishes had their own priests who lived onsite.
There's an abandoned synagogue in the Catskills, near Spring Glen NY, which hasn't had regular services in decades, but every so often a vanload of Jewish tourists drives up, tracks down the caretaker, and unlocks the building, and they hold a prayer service, just so the building doesn't forget what it's there for.
Couldn't you do that? Grab the priest and a bunch of worshippers from one or both of the parishes, drive out there one Sunday, and celebrate Mass?
That's sort of what we do about once a year with the Novena, but it's no longer fit to celebrate Mass in - to be honest, I doubt it's safe enough to hold a congregation inside, given its condition. Archdiocese (Portland, go figure, right?) won't do jack to rehabilitate it, so it's stuck in a limbo.
It's complicated, but realize that there has been a massive amount propaganda that's made you believe that.

I’ve found that the Catholics that most people think are not normal are usually the best people. The ones with 5+ kids. The ones that choose to go to traditional Latin mass. Long story short, the SSPX doesn't have officially recognized status because that's often the way priestly fraternities work, however being recognized officially is not a prerequisite to being allowed to validly confer the sacraments. What matters is matter, form, and intent. For a priest to be valid matter they must be a legitimate successor to the apostles conferred via Holy Orders, a valid form of the mass and sacraments must be followed, and those adhering to said form and having proper Holy Orders must have intention to confer the sacraments.
SSPX priests have a valid line of succession, they follow a valid form of the mass, and as far as I know they have the intent.
SSPX are contradictory schismatics - they are not in communion with the novus ordo church, yet claim to recognize bergolio and his pedo horde as legitmate.
Find an parish that offers the traditional latin rite and rejects Vatican II and its adherents entirely. That is the true Church.
Contrary to what many believe, not all Jesuits are hippie marxists. To be sure, there are a fair share of them, but not all. My childhood priest was a Jesuit who got special dispensation to conduct the traditional Latin Mass once a week...and who was more akin to the sobriquet "Pope's marines" than anything else; could have given Baptist preachers lessons on how to conduct fire and brimstone sermons....St. Michael the Archangel and all that.

Many times the choice of pope is seen as a lesson for the times. The lesson many are taking from Francis is that we cannot always rely on the clergy to do the right thing or defend the faith from the world, and instead must do so ourselves.
Although Pope Francis is definitely more liberal, I think he's less so than the media often portrays him to be. He's continued to oppose abortion and gay marriage, and recently shot down the idea of having married priests that was proposed at the Amazon Synod -- something that the liberal faction within the Church has been clamoring for for a long time.
His stances on immigration and the environment are the only ones that stand out to me as not being in lockstep with American political conservatism. I view those as being more to inspire us to personal action rather than trying to create policy change.
Although unchecked immigration and open borders will ruin America, we still have to treat people humanely even as we turn them away. Although the Green New Deal and similar proposals would be disastrous and are a vehicle for ushering in Communism, we do still have an obligation to use our world's resources responsibly and conserve its natural beauty so that our children and grandchildren can enjoy the same bounty that we have.
Another important thing to consider is that the media is rarely kind to Catholics. No matter who the Pope is, Western media outlets have a habit of championing the Pope for everything he says that agrees with their political sensibilities and demonizing him whenever he says something that they disagree with. Generally, ordained priests interested in military ministry obtain permission from their bishop to be commissioned as Chaplain Corps officers and serve at least one full commitment period full-time in the service. With the decline in the number of priests in the US, more military installations are contracting with local priests to provide services (Masses, confessions, spiritual direction, etc.) on a part-time basis.
One of the reasons why Catholic priests are unmarried is because they are "married" to the Church via ordination. It's not meant to be a job but a vocation.
My daughter had to take time off from her regular duties to go chaperone a guy who claimed "nature worship" as his religion during basic. It involved him sitting under a tree "communing with nature spirits" until he was done -- which she noted tended to vary according to what he might want to get out of doing or if he wanted to particularly annoy the DS. Mass was not so catered to however. Yes, it did not help her morale, nor opinion of her service.

A higher percentage of teachers are pedophiles and pederasts. They usually prey on poor kids from broken homes. Also the majority of abuse cases in the Catholic Church are older, mostly from the 50’s-80s. It was a big problem back then and while there still are issues with bishops trying to cover it up in some dioceses it’s much better now. You're ignoring the fact that the Catholic Church pays to relocate pedo priest and spends tons of money (catholic tithes) to protect pedo priest. These statements have been made, repeatedly, at numerous levels.
Catechists, Clergy, and anyone else who works near children are required to undergo criminal background checks before going near any child that is not their own (and it has been this way for at least a decade or more now). They're also required to undergo specific training to recognize, report, and root out any pedos or pedo activity.
Nowadays, if a priest gets credibly accused, the diocese will not only turn him over to the cops as soon as they are notified of it, but will not support him in any way (legally or otherwise) unless he's cleared or acquitted.
There are some ancillary issues that still need rooting-out (see also the Lavender Mafia I referenced), but I daresay that today, a kid is way safer in a local parish than he ever will be in a public school. The bad reputation is going to be hard to overcome, but I can say with certainty that the steps have been taken, and when it comes to rooting that crap out, are still being taken.

Hmm, in doing some reading on Military.com it appears the problem is a lack of Catholic Priests joining the Chaplain corps. Reportedly other faiths have enough people to fill the demand within the Chaplain Corps that there isn't a shortage.
The Navy was having to contract out, a more costly measure apparently, to obtain Catholic Priests for services within the military. Supposed budget constraints led them to cancelling the contract.

When I was in Marine Corps boot camp everyone had to go to some religious service in sundays, it didn't matter, i remember 1 recruit objecting because his religion wasn't available. When asked what religion he was he says Native American spiritual beliefs (or something like that). Drill instructors told him he'd better find something else and had him go to protestant services. He later went to the Hindu services. This was 1997.
This was similar in the Air Force a lot more recently, but it was mostly because the instructors just wanted to fucking get rid of everyone for a few hours on Sunday so they could catch up on other things or catch some extra sleep. If anyone stayed behind, they would have had to monitor them.

What's interesting is that a lot of that growth is happening in Africa and it is Catholic. The evangelicals and Pentecostals I agree are more Christian than mainline protestant denominations and liberal Catholics. And in fact a lot of their growth is happening in traditionally Catholic areas like South America where the church has been heavily infiltrated by communists.
And in fact I actually expect the Catholic Church to get smaller in the coming years, outside of Africa and other poor countries at least. But it will become firmer. And I still believe regardless that it is both the metaphysical and really the psychological bed rock of Christianity for most people, whether they acknowledge it or not.
For example I think that Evangelical Christianity will lose its force if the Catholic church just totally cucks out. It undermines the whole mission to have the oldest and most traditional branch of Christianity cave in.

No abortion is still an automatic excommunication as are certain other sins. This typically means that you have to go to the bishop to be reinstated into the church after confessing it. However in some places where abortion is very common, the Bishops granted local priests permission to absolve women who had abortions of their sins and bring them back into communion without them having to make a special petition. The pope then temporarily granted this power to all priests in the church.
So it's not a change in Dogma, the church and particularly the pope gets to decide who gets excommunicated and when and they got to decide when people get back in.
Meanwhile most of the mainline Protestant churches in America have gay female Bishops at this point. Honestly it's a non denominational churches that are more Christian now, together with the Orthodox and the traditional breeds of Catholics.
And yeah the Orthodox are pretty firm because of their traditionalism oh, they still have all the sacraments and Apostolic succession. So they won't collapse, but even some of them are going towards female priests and it's only a matter of time before they do gay marriage too.

Only an ordained priest can administer Last Rights. There are only two sacraments in the RCC that a priest isn't needed for: Baptism and Marriage. However, the RCC to record the Baptism or marriage, a conditional baptism and a blessing of the marriage has to be done by the priest. For instance, I was born at 21 weeks so a nurse baptized me because I was at risk baby but later, a priest did the ceremony and the conditional Baptism in case i wasn't baptized properly. The conditional baptism is the one the RCC records. Not the one done by the Nurse.

(The last priest at my local parish was a former USAF chaplain; he made it to Major before he resigned his commission to do missionary work. It's not often you can give full-on clergy a good-natured ration of shit and get it thrown right back at full velocity.)
The number of Catholic priests in the US has plummeted. They barely have enough to staff the parishes. As such, permission to serve in the Chaplain Corps full-time is much more judiciously granted than it was say 30 years ago.
I can grok that. The priest for our little country parish (64 souls total) actually serves in ours, and runs another parish in another small town on his way to us from his rectory in Portland. Way out beyond both towns is a mostly abandoned parish that last saw Mass in 1970-something (I know because I drag a mower out to it once in awhile to keep the grass semi-tamed, and to ensure nobody has broken into it. A few folks gather to do a novena on the lawn there once a year or so, so that nobody runs into tax trouble against the state over it.)
100 years ago all three parishes had their own priests who lived onsite.
There's an abandoned synagogue in the Catskills, near Spring Glen NY, which hasn't had regular services in decades, but every so often a vanload of Jewish tourists drives up, tracks down the caretaker, and unlocks the building, and they hold a prayer service, just so the building doesn't forget what it's there for.
Couldn't you do that? Grab the priest and a bunch of worshippers from one or both of the parishes, drive out there one Sunday, and celebrate Mass?
That's sort of what we do about once a year with the Novena, but it's no longer fit to celebrate Mass in - to be honest, I doubt it's safe enough to hold a congregation inside, given its condition. Archdiocese (Portland, go figure, right?) won't do jack to rehabilitate it, so it's stuck in a limbo.

Long story short, the SSPX doesn't have officially recognized status because that's often the way priestly fraternities work, however being recognized officially is not a prerequisite to being allowed to validly confer the sacraments. What matters is matter, form, and intent. For a priest to be valid matter they must be a legitimate successor to the apostles conferred via Holy Orders, a valid form of the mass and sacraments must be followed, and those adhering to said form and having proper Holy Orders must have intention to confer the sacraments.
SSPX priests have a valid line of succession, they follow a valid form of the mass, and as far as I know they have the intent.
Their sacraments are valid (but illicit). Still probably an ok option if there are no other traditional parishes nearby.
SSPX are contradictory schismatics - they are not in communion with the novus ordo church, yet claim to recognize bergolio and his pedo horde as legitmate.
Find an parish that offers the traditional latin rite and rejects Vatican II and its adherents entirely. That is the true Church.

Many of my Catholic family thinks Francis is a usurper and Benedict is still the Pope.
Although Pope Francis is definitely more liberal, I think he's less so than the media often portrays him to be. He's continued to oppose abortion and gay marriage, and recently shot down the idea of having married priests that was proposed at the Amazon Synod -- something that the liberal faction within the Church has been clamoring for for a long time.
His stances on immigration and the environment are the only ones that stand out to me as not being in lockstep with American political conservatism. I view those as being more to inspire us to personal action rather than trying to create policy change.
Although unchecked immigration and open borders will ruin America, we still have to treat people humanely even as we turn them away. Although the Green New Deal and similar proposals would be disastrous and are a vehicle for ushering in Communism, we do still have an obligation to use our world's resources responsibly and conserve its natural beauty so that our children and grandchildren can enjoy the same bounty that we have.
Another important thing to consider is that the media is rarely kind to Catholics. No matter who the Pope is, Western media outlets have a habit of championing the Pope for everything he says that agrees with their political sensibilities and demonizing him whenever he says something that they disagree with. Much like the MSM does with GEOTUS, if the Pope says something they disagree with, it's very common for media to deliberately remove context from a Pope's statement and twist it to mean something else.
At the end of the day, the Pope isn't here to fit neatly into whatever little political box people construct for him: the Pope is here to be the Pope. He's not the kind of Pope I wanted, but he's the one the Holy Spirit chose.

Today I learned the military contracts Catholic Priests. Had no idea, I thought people with a theology degree enlisted or something.
Generally, ordained priests interested in military ministry obtain permission from their bishop to be commissioned as Chaplain Corps officers and serve at least one full commitment period full-time in the service. With the decline in the number of priests in the US, more military installations are contracting with local priests to provide services (Masses, confessions, spiritual direction, etc.) on a part-time basis.

One of the reasons why Catholic priests are unmarried is because they are "married" to the Church via ordination. It's not meant to be a job but a vocation.
My daughter had to take time off from her regular duties to go chaperone a guy who claimed "nature worship" as his religion during basic. It involved him sitting under a tree "communing with nature spirits" until he was done -- which she noted tended to vary according to what he might want to get out of doing or if he wanted to particularly annoy the DS. Mass was not so catered to however. Yes, it did not help her morale, nor opinion of her service.
Well, that's part of this play. A contract priest can concentrate on his Christian mission, a chaplain has to be everybody's spirit advisor. Cutting out the contract priests dilutes the Christian effort.

According to a study by the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, ~4% of Catholic clergy in America are accused of sexual abuse, but the Department of Education found that between 5% and 7% of all teachers actually engaged in sexual abuse of students.
At least as far as America is concerned, that's 160,000-224,000 pedo teachers minimum compared to at most 2,000 pedo priests (assuming that every single priest accused is guilty).
At those numbers, every priest accused of sex abuse would have had to molest at least 80 kids each before the Catholic Church in America broke even with the number of kids molested by our own public school system.

Also the majority of abuse cases in the Catholic Church are older, mostly from the 50’s-80s. It was a big problem back then and while there still are issues with bishops trying to cover it up in some dioceses it’s much better now. You're ignoring the fact that the Catholic Church pays to relocate pedo priest and spends tons of money (catholic tithes) to protect pedo priest. It's not just that catholicism has a problem with pedos. The highest levels of the church are making it a safe space for pedos to abuse children. Every dollar tithed supports this degeneracy. It's not the belief system that's the problem. It's the organization and leadership supporting abuse of children.
Downvote all you want. Pedophilia has no place in the world. Catholics could make a statement by condemning these actions and stopping tithes until it's fixed. Silence in the face of evil while funding it with your money is unforgivable.
These statements have been made, repeatedly, at numerous levels.
Catechists, Clergy, and anyone else who works near children are required to undergo criminal background checks before going near any child that is not their own (and it has been this way for at least a decade or more now). They're also required to undergo specific training to recognize, report, and root out any pedos or pedo activity.
Nowadays, if a priest gets credibly accused, the diocese will not only turn him over to the cops as soon as they are notified of it, but will not support him in any way (legally or otherwise) unless he's cleared or acquitted.
There are some ancillary issues that still need rooting-out (see also the Lavender Mafia I referenced), but I daresay that today, a kid is way safer in a local parish than he ever will be in a public school. The bad reputation is going to be hard to overcome, but I can say with certainty that the steps have been taken, and when it comes to rooting that crap out, are still being taken.
You can't excuse the pedo priest by saying teachers do it too. That just means we need to overhaul the schools as well as the church leadership.
I'll believe the Catholic church is doing something about it when they actually take action. Scandal after scandal continues.
This statement is only true as of 2019! And it doesn't address the continued coverups that happen. Yeah the church forsakes you if you get caught, but they also help to not let their priest get caught.

I had a physics teacher in high school who was at first a full time navy chaplain attached to the marine corps and then a reservist. He was awesome. He was also a carmelite. I have nothing but respect for that order. How was this even a thing?

Hmm, in doing some reading on Military.com it appears the problem is a lack of Catholic Priests joining the Chaplain corps. Reportedly other faiths have enough people to fill the demand within the Chaplain Corps that there isn't a shortage.
The Navy was having to contract out, a more costly measure apparently, to obtain Catholic Priests for services within the military. Supposed budget constraints led them to cancelling the contract.
While it is bad optics for the Navy, it does raise the question of why doesn't the Catholic Church send more priests to join the Chaplain Corps? The article claims that there is a shortage of priests in general for the Catholic Church. The problem seems to start there.

Those agents advanced in the ranks and went on to subvert the church from the highest levels, starting with the seminaries, which began to recruit gay men while simultaneously rejecting orthodox seminarians (my dad was an orthodox seminarian that got kicked out of seminary - so I guess some good came out of it, at least for me). That homosexual influx has led to the disgusting clerical sexual abuse scandals that the church struggles with. They then promoted the Modernist Second Vatican Council which stirred division and discord by obfuscating church doctrine to the point where many Catholics fail to see abortion as evil, gay marriage as an atrocity and worst of all, fail to believe in the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. This breakdown has nearly destroyed the Church and has definitely resulted in a moral decline in the world.
This attack by some in the military to remove Catholicism, while allowing the rest of the religions to continue being represented is VERY telling. Consider these words from Bishop Fulton Sheen:
