I think they wanted someone they could control and Biden is involved with all the corruption so who better to make sure it gets swept under the rug than Biden.
I also think they dug their heels in and stuck with a shitty candidate/game plan instead of pivoting.
They chose the two weakest candidates to sacrifice. Nobody is beating Trump so might as well protect the political careers of the candidates they are still grooming for the future.
Bernie had a ceiling of like 30% among democrats. Biden smoked Bernie when it was just those two remaining. Democrat voters clearly chose Joe over Bernie. As to democrat leadership seemingly not caring about the nominee, it is entirely possible that they don’t want to ‘waste’ a good candidate. The incumbent President is almost always reelected. (Only three incumbents lost since wwII)

They have no intention of winning the presidency. Biden has obvious mental issues, and no one likes Harris. Its a bad ticket.
They want Congress. Republicans are most exposed in congress.
If they get both houses, they can then impeach. At the very least they can stop Trumps agenda for 4 more years.
