The remittance tax on money sent to Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, and other shitholes, is the way to go. Put a 2% tax on them, have Western Union and other money changers collect and remit it.

That's a great way to recoup the money we spend on illegals from those countries.

It has to be a nuisance tax. Tax 25%, plus the (I'm guessing here) 5-6% Western Union fee, and you're creating a cottage industry of people taking cash across the border to bring to people in the old country..

If you're gonna send $ 1,000 to Guatemala, and you're going to pay $ 300 and end up with only $ 700 to get there, you'd be tempted to give your money to a runner who will combine your cash with others and do the job for $ 150, so your relative back in the old country gets $ 850, not $ 700.

At a minimal amount, like 2%, there's not going to be enough money for anyone to smuggle cash over the border. That's why I like 2%. Hell, even 1% would be significant, in terms of paying for the wall, then paying for the ongoing maintenance of it.

And paid more when they actually started patrolling their southern border. That cut down on our work quite a bit.

Trump never said how Mexico would pay, but Libtards always say he was lying because it's not a direct lump sum.

So the best approach that other countries have done for a remittance tax that is both legally and politically tenable is a remittance tax credit. You charge 20% for funds remitted to a specific country and give a tax rebate for what was charged. That way it only targets those not paying taxes/ illegals and doesn’t target / fall into the trap of hurting your own people who wish to remit legally.

Put $1000 rebate cap on it and we're getting close to a deal. Anything after that is taxed.

Don't need billions of dollars flowing out of our economy.

Remittances are literally taking money out of our economy. Billions of dollars that could be spent in America washed out to sea.

I remember reading this or something similar on his campaign website back it 2016. It always amazes me when people say “Riiiight, and Mexico’s just gonna PAY for it?!?”

Yes through taxes and fees. We’re not sending them a bill you absolute moron. Read and find out.

If your kid breaks a window and you garnish their allowance until the costs are recouped, they paid for it too.

I'm definitely on board with this. Why didn't someone think of this earlier??

I don't think a remittance tax would work. There are too many ways to transfer funds for valid reasons that you wouldn't want taxed but could still be abused. e.g. buy something online from a fake Mexican business and have them give your family the money.

Toll booths sound good as long as some internal politics don't cause inspection standards to be lowered just so someone can advance through their collection figures.

Some countries tax the remittance on the inbound side, so why wouldn't the US get a cut as well?

Sounds like a crime to evade taxes. Sounds like a reason to get deported.

Better just play by the rules, Pedro.

If nothing else works, tollbooths would
