The Enlightenment was about rationality. When The Declaration says, "... self-evident..." it means, look with your eyeballs, it's plain to see, don't get into fantasy. Just plain look. Think.
The Romantic viewpoint, which the Germans preferred, is about "....wheee! Freaky, man!...." and that is the weird and crazy element you see in these riots. Nobody cares about the FBI crime statistics and what actually happened.
These things are still going on right now. Ideally you want a balance. Rationality, sure, but a bit of tenderness too. Sweetness. The American balance is perfect.
