He's just not a very good driver. He has never won a Cup Series race and has only finished in the top 5 once in each of the past three years.. His best finish this year was 5th a couple of weeks ago at Daytona, but that was only because there was a big wreck in front of him on the last two laps that let him move up from 15th. Outside of Daytona (where he lucked into 5th), his recent finishes are 21st, 25th, 27th, 21st, and 38th. Not the kind of performances Richard Petty expects from his iconic #43 car.
Petty sold out to some leftist activist investor and he probably pushed this as far as it went. Without this, NASCAR could have remained the only uncucked sport besides golf (mostly).
