It's not about denigrating your choice or your experiences. It's not mocking. It means that if you have decided you have nothing left to live for, at least spend your time on your way out doing something great for other people. Worst case scenario, you're still gone and those other people at least got some joy. Best case scenario is it shows you that you do have something good in your life worth fighting for and you realize that rock bottom is behind you.
