I've been in the tech sector over 20 years. There is no "accidentally" wiping a phone. Anyone that buys that is either mentally deficient or willfully assisting.
One of the first things they would have done was take a copy of each phone they were examining.
Actually it appears that one of the first things they do with evidence is to destroy it, at least in investigations like this.
The default for forensics is to make a copy first thing. That’s how they get into phones when they want. Make two copies. Try 10 tries or whatever, when that fails, the good copy duplicates, and the cycle continues until it’s unlocked. There are more effective ways, but that’s a brute force method.
