Everyone seems to forget there were plenty of terror attacks by Osama Bin Laden's group prior to 9/11, including a prior attempt to bomb the World Trade Center itself.
Bin Laden was a scumbag terrorist, but ultimately the only thing he wanted was US troops out of Saudi Arabia. We went in as a staging ground for the (first) Iraq War and then somehow decided to stay and setup permanent bases there.
It would have been nice to have had at least one Presidential Administration that wasn't filled with neocon war profiteers to ask the question: does it make sense to spend American blood and treasure to protect sand owned by a bunch of ungrateful Arabs that were rich enough to afford their own security?
