At least Partly because kids have gone from being a necessity for free labor. Helping on the family farm, helping run the family business etc. To being really expensive furniture that bitches back at you.

And partly because certain neurological conditions that prompt difficulty in establishing normal social skills and behaviors that would help form the building blocks of relationships are becoming increasingly common. Autism for instance has become increasingly common.

But really there’s quite a few contributing factors both a mix of physical, cultural, and economic.

If the kids are "bitching pieces of furniture", I would say the cause of that is the parents regardless of the labor needs of the family.
