Yikes, sorry to hear that.

A friend of mine had a daughter who worked there with her best friend. After the planes hit, she and her friend wanted to get out of the building. Their boss stopped them with: "No. We were told to stay put and not take the elevators."

My friend's daughter said "I'm taking the stairs, then." But her best friend -- afraid to tick off the boss at their new job -- stayed behind.

I can only tell you this story because my friend's daughter lived. Her friend, her boss, and everyone else in the office did not. The moral of the story here is always trust your instincts.

As a New Yorker I will never forget that day, or the days afterward. I never felt more bonded with complete strangers. Everyone had a deep sense of union and of community; race, color, creed - absolutely none of that shit mattered. The exact opposite of what's going on now.
