The lack of respect for police officers and their station, that's what. Due to a whole new crop of snot-nosed whelplings who wouldn't know true struggle if it bit them in their coddled asses.
Cops munitions couldn’t penetrate bank robbers plate armor, they had to commandeer rifles from local gun stores. After this police started carrying heavier firepower. There is amazing video and docs about this if you want to learn more.
"Militarized police" is a meaningless phrase. The job has always had the possibility of violence. Police simply opted for the most effective offensive and defensive arms and armor an individual can get. This is after decades of sticking to the costume of the circa Andy Griffith uniform.
Militarization talk is nonsense. Where's the PD's artillery, close air support, satellite intel, etc? Body armor, ARs, and cargo pants does not a military make.
The bucket holster and revolver had already been phased out, the NYPD moved to automatics in '94. They grandfathered officers who had previously purchased service revolvers and allowed them to continue carrying them, but by 2001 this image would have already been an unusual sight.
Before I even read comments I thought, geez, shes got an old school holster and revolver and it looks like the original badge she was issued. Never upgraded, never needed to. Probably never missed a day of work. Her profession and her memory will be honored by patriots forever. Ignore the voices of evil pedes. Great photo.
Seeing her badge twisted and marred by the wreckage brings me to tears. I was in fourth grade when it happened, and I swear, every year the memory hurts more and more because I realize what we lost that day. Not only 3000 innocents and hundreds of the bravest among us... But our spirit as a nation.
We can never forget what was done to us - doubtlessly under the negligence of our leaders, if not their outright indifference - but more than that... We must remember the spirit we had. We must remember the hope and courage our culture once held, and we must fight to bring it back to life.
If we don't, everything heroes like Mrs. Smith and everybody between then and now gave up will be for naught.
Never forget what happened, and always remember those who gave their all so that we could carry on.
Yeah, the beaten up badge got me. I stopped what I was doing and thought about her family, who's last connection back to their loved one may have been that badge.

Corrected
I remember watching that on TV, live. INSANE. Michael Mann movie IRL.
Post 9/11 we militarized the police. Then when they used the shit we said “oh nooo you can’t use it against rioters” Ferguson.
Militarizations started in the 80s with the “war on drugs”
Which is a war on people and a total failure like our “war on poverty”
Old enough to see what you did there.......

It is the sad, sad truth
They do indeed. And the media is in lock step with them in all they do

So sad...RIP, Officer Smith.
Never forget.
19 years, you'd think it'd stop hurting.
I've seen this picture of her many times but I didn't know she died. Damn.
Me either.
NEVER,EVER, EVER FORGET
RESPECT!
May her memory be eternal!
Why wait till tomorrow?
