There is something very wrong with a society whose heroes are celebrity athletes, billionaires, actors, singers, and pundits

"Johnny Depp will show up to a hospital in whatever town he’s in for a shoot, dressed up in character, and spends all day with the kids"

Yeah.....about those visits with the kids...

A side effect of capitalism. Money buys respect and no ones going to be shelling out for xtra monie to fire fighters like they do for lebron jerseys

These are facts. But we don't need to pay the real heroes ridiculous sums. In fact that would be a problem in and of itself. What we need to do is merely elevate them as role models, culturally speaking.

Thanks for sharing that perspective. Perhaps that is a more fair way to look at it. I don't mean to say that people are not worthy of praise because of this or that profession.

What I mean is that people get famous for stupid shit and not for the kind of thing that inspire us to be better.

Sadly, I have no idea who these actors and athletes are you mention. Why? Bc they don't get talked about as much. If they're in the news it's bc they got in trouble or got divorced again.

It's also a problem that we give so much attention to people who really aren't relatable to most people. Firefighters are relatable. You or I could be one. We won't be actors, and we will never Iive that lifestyle. We shouldn't aspire to that lifestyle. We should aspire to make contributions to our community, like firefighters do.
