I stopped watching the NFL years before this controversy because I couldn’t stand how pathetic the fans are. It’s ok to like watching sports but watching grown men piss all this money away on overpriced merchandise and get so excited or upset by how well a team of athletes who could not care less about them perform was offputting to me.

Yessir, and now I honestly don't even realize I'm missing the games. It's like I never spent entire Sundays parked on the couch.

Jeff Foxworthy had a special where he referenced it. That was like 25 years ago. I recently watched it for the first time.

Yeah shut up old man, young people watch old movies. Especially in these times of uncreative re-makes. Classics are where the real culture is.

Never seen the movie but I know exactly the scene this is referencing.

-1
PNWArtist -1 points ago +5 / -6

It was a horrible movie. The whole thing was like some dude's homosexual fantasy of sticking his stick into some other guy's behind. While a moron plays the guitar behind it.

I couldn't watch the whole thing, just parts. It honestly... I don't understand why it's got such legs, but it does.

2Fangz 8 points ago +8 / -0

Read the novel. The movie is a decent adaptation, but the novel is beautifully written. It was a literary hit before the movie.

There's a lot of good insights about what it means to be a man. It would be labeled toxic today.

I am under 40 and i get it. I had always heard references to the movie, the banjo scene, squeal like a pig boy, etc. Finally had to check out the movie to see what it was about.

I grew up in the country and i don't think the movie is completely fiction. We used to take drives up into the mountains on weekends. Just pick a road and see where it goes, no maps or agenda. I remember very specifically one time we were WAY UP in the middle of no where. The power lines had stopped a ways back so we figured we were up on DNR land or whatnot, not uncommon. We come around this bend and there is a dilapidated but obviously lived in trailer home by the road. Tons of broken down cars lined up in front of the trailer in various states of decay. As we drew closer, two figures with long uncut hair popped out of the trailer and stood on the porch, didn't get a good look at them due to the shade of the woods and the porch roof but they looked stacked. You could tell they were not accustomed to having visitors on their road, they just watched us like it was a rare event, waiting to see what we were going to do.

There was a feeling in the air, everyone felt it. My mom put it in reverse and booked it. They watched us as we left. 100% true story.

Don't get me wrong, i grew up in the country in farm land. Most farm and country people are really good folk. But up in the mountains, i wouldn't be surprised.

Football on TV used to be a very comforting thing. It was part of the feel of Fall. I enjoyed the game, more or less. Never got rabid over any team, but I’d tune in. Pretty easy for me to learn to do something else on Sundays.

Pass out on the couch in the second quarter and wake up for the last 5 minutes of the 4th?

Same with baseball, it was just pretext for a lovely afternoon nap.

5
BirchTBarlow 5 points ago +6 / -1

The NFL had the most casual fans. It was so popular because it was popular. Once they stop being a thing that people need to keep up with the remain relevant, they will lose a bunch of their audience and never get them back.

3
NomadicKrow 3 points ago +3 / -0

I flipped through the channels last week and found a game. The announcers were sucking BLM dick. I turned it immediately. Happened on it again ten minutes later and they were still preaching. I turned it off and read a few chapters of DUNE instead.

3
MrJugsMcBulge 3 points ago +3 / -0

That’s the impression I’ve always gotten too - that football games are just an excuse to get together with friends, eat, drink and socialize. There are so many commercials and other extended stoppages in play that there’s lots of time to chat and interact with friends.

Bud, they had the worst premier in a decade.

Most tuned in because it was the first game. I turned off at half time when they did their stupid preachy bullshit.

Give it a week or two and see what happens.

33
Shigaru 33 points ago +35 / -2

You still felt the need to watch the first half.

7
Ingerimm 7 points ago +7 / -0

You make a poignant point.

A lot of people talk a good talk, but don't walk a good walk.

Time will tell if enough people are really going to take a stand, or covertly keep watching and supporting them.

4
booblitchutz 4 points ago +5 / -1

Most people didn’t watch past the first half anyway. NFL on TV is tedium packed with beer and truck commercials.

21
viVbiz-bufmu1-qodmem 21 points ago +23 / -2

Ok. Only the tip and half the shaft went in. But they didn’t finish.

7
Viewer01 7 points ago +11 / -4

Ah. Do you condemn folks before they've actually done anything wrong?

You see, Hulu now has data that I quit the app precisely when the NFL started their bull shit. Thus directly costing them and the nfl money.

Rest assured that they’re watching this closely and now have at least one data point that the content is unfavorable.

They said only 15%? of seats at the stadium were allowed to be sold - and 'street price' for even that SMALL amount of seats was BELOW the FACE VALUE of the TICKET PRICE....

So demand was in the dirt to see this game.

12
Barthaneous 12 points ago +15 / -3

When i hear that football (sport)fans are back despite all the evil BLM bullshit. Means just a few things about the fans.

-1 is that they are just ignorant of whats going on. Living under a rock sort of speak. And not paying attention to thr news.

-2 They are completely just as evil as BLM and Antifa becuse they do know whats going on and are worthy to lose their citizenship for supporting marxist commies who support covicted criminals .

-3 a mix of 1 and 2.

Thats it.

Barthaneous 4 points ago +5 / -1

Yep. I knew people who couldnt stop talking about football. Like they knew everything about everyone from every team. It was sad. Because they had nothing else to contribute to any other conversation. They are sports nerds and to me its a pure waste of life when anyone is so into something that actually has so little to benefit from it.

A hobby or intrest is one thing. But to be possessed by something so trivial is ridiculous

-5
Regionalphilbin -5 points ago +3 / -8
  1. They like football a lot.
-1
Peace-maker -1 points ago +9 / -10

Yeah. For decades my family has met up after church for football every Sunday (grill out in the off season).

All MAGA folks, and we don’t buy any NFL merch since they started their shit. They get a dozen viewers on one TV set, and my team has no kneelers. And every day I see some insecure puss on here trying to shame me for what I watch for an afternoon.

Get a life dorks! When I boycott something I don’t go glorify myself online and try to shit on everyone not participating in my protest. You’re not changing anyone’s mind with your lefty styled purity test.

9
rentfREEEE_since2016 9 points ago +11 / -2

Two things 1) NFL Revenue is shared between teams. It doesn’t matter if your team has kneelers or not 2) ad slots don’t care how you justify watching, or how few TVs you watch on, so long as you watch.

I choose not to watch the NFL. you can choose to watch it. But you’re still validating their BLM agenda.

NFL: “oh, you don’t like BLM? Fuck you, we know you’ll find an excuse to watch anyways. “

1
Peace-maker 1 point ago +3 / -2

I totally understand this point and appreciate you being civil about it. I fully support the boycotts. I hope it does curb the NFL’s activism. But I get awful tired of crybaby’s on here who need 100% compliance from an online community to feel validated.

And if anyone didn’t know there are ways of viewing that do not grant ratings.

5
KekistaniMemeLord 5 points ago +6 / -1

you;re not protesting anything if you;re still giving them views. if you want the NFL to change and stop with the woke BS then the only way is to completely starve them of revenue. Half-ass isn't going to cut it.

-1
Peace-maker -1 points ago +2 / -3

They get one view from all of my family. That’s the extent of my activism. You protest however you want. The elitists here can spare me the sermon. Because if the boycott mafia came to your house they could find one aspect of your life that contradicts your personal ethics.

7
KekistaniMemeLord 7 points ago +7 / -0

well sure, but not from something easy like not watching sports. Sports aren't a necessity and they never have been, why watch an organization that openly insults you?

-1
Peace-maker -1 points ago +2 / -3

I get you, but didn’t this whole community migrate here after years of hostility from Reddit? Were we all MAGA traitors for using the platform? What about all the Chinese products in all of our homes? Is someone here honestly going to say the owners of EVERY corporation that they give money to is ideologically pure and pro-American? That’s nearly impossible. What US company made the phones/computers and software we’re all using?

5
KekistaniMemeLord 5 points ago +5 / -0

hey I get that too, but turning off the TV and not watching some football for a few months is alot easier than manufacturing supply chains in brick and mortar locations that we have no control over. In the instance of reddit what did the community do? made its own website. Easy fix. Same with NFL just turn it off. These are things we can actually easily make an influence on without much effort.

4
booblitchutz 4 points ago +4 / -0

Fine, I don’t really give a fuck what others do. I choose not to watch and if some people do, well I guess that’s just what happens.

-1
Peace-maker -1 points ago +2 / -3

God bless you. This site has a handful of thought police that hound people (nfl viewers, Netflix subscribers, Jews) for not being in lock step like a reverse Reddit gestapo. All the patting themselves on the back is fine, until they start calling out everyone who has a minuscule difference with them.

5
KekistaniMemeLord 5 points ago +5 / -0

hey im only going to make one point here, large companies like Netflix and the NFL dont learn any lessons from your continued viewership and patronage. If you dont like what they are doing then whining about it online while continuing to watch will change nothing. These companies only listen to changes in their bottom line and nothing else. If you continue supporting them with your time and money then all the NFL will think is that it can continue to push this woke bs and insult you to your face and all Netflix will learn is that child porn is a-ok not enough people are going to cancel their subscriptions to hurt them that bad anyway. Only point people are trying to make, it doesnt make sense to not like what these companies are doing but yet continue to support them when the solution for getting them to change is very simple and doesnt require much effort on everyones part.

0
Peace-maker 0 points ago +2 / -2

Point taken, and I’m not whining about it online. When I’m hosting, the NFL gets no ratings. We watch illegally online. I fully support anyone holding any company accountable, and do so myself in different ways. What I reject is being shamed by pushy purists on here. If anyone wants to partake porn/nfl/Netflix/Starbucks/chick-fil-a they aren’t a “fucking traitor” or “cuck.” That shit is childish.

3

3
booblitchutz 3 points ago +4 / -1

87% based on what data exactly?

3
tdwinner2020 3 points ago +4 / -1

This is 87% of those who remained after several years over which the NFL list 45% of its viewers l, so they've lost more now.

2
booblitchutz 2 points ago +3 / -1

Where exactly is this 87% metric coming from, anyway?

1
tdwinner2020 1 point ago +2 / -1

The NFL's ratings for their opener were down 13% from last year. But their ratings in general are down 50% from 3 years ago, and this year's was the least watched opener in a decaf l decade.

2
booblitchutz 2 points ago +3 / -1

That includes all the places that just leave their TVs on the game, surely. If they isolated households I wonder how that would change that metric?

2
Frankly_George 2 points ago +3 / -1

If you didn't believe the polls in 2016, don't believe the polls for 2020, then why would you believe their numbers for television ratings?

The numbers lie. They lie. Stop listening and reacting to them.

What's that? They can't lie about the ratings because it's a business? What did you think 'Get woke; Go broke' was referring to!?

Yes! Yes, they absolutely will lie about their businesses in support of their narratives. Yes, they are lying now.

They're not going to turn off the NFL the instant they do something politicized as a protest.

But they WILL turn off the NFL when it KEEPS going on...and on...and on...and on...because it's ruining their enjoyment of football.

Ratings have already declined, and will continue to decline.
