People who honestly believe there is anything like a red button need their heads checked. A button has about 100 ways it can malfunction. The spring gets stuck. The trigger doesn't connect. Whatever it is connected to doesn't receive the signal. Someone literally presses it by accident.
Launching nukes is such a big deal that we have had multiple instances of nuclear launch site commanders just refusing a legit launch order because they didn't think anyone would actually launch the nuke. Thus saving the world.
Look into Stanislav Petrov, who ignored a false alarm launch and thus prevented global nuclear war. The false alarm went off showing 1 launch followed by 5 more and he IGNORED direct standing orders to launch nukes. Of course the communists reprimanded him for it.
