I think a lot of this comes from the misconception that the political spectrum has fascism on the far right and socialism on the far left. That spectrum makes no sense because socialism is it's own brand of fascism. The real spectrum is fascism on the far left and no government at all on the far right. The small government types sit more in the middle.
