I would assume that US govt has already worked through these scenarios and has our response ready w regard to their nukes, etc. I can see a conventional skirmish for certain things but not WWIII. Source: None. Just a wag.

My father worked on a NIKE site during Vietnam. The purpose of those sites was to stop a nuclear attack if they should try to drop the bomb on U.S. soil. By shooting the plane down with a nuclear weapon. Over U.S.soil.
That was the official plan. I doubt it's gotten better.
