I can't seem to focus and get much done each day. Working home on the computer is so depressing. Do you have any suggestions for how to get going and seize the day, high-energy Pede? Do you maintain a stringent schedule or have rewards to look forward to?

On top of all of that, I don’t know if you’ve ever had your arm strapped to your side for 2 and a half months, but the second you’re cleared to move it, what better place to be than the gym??

Also, about seizing the day. The greatest successes have failed more times than you have ever tried. Try something new every day, if you fail, so fucking what? At least you tried and learned something new in the process. Start a business. Write a book. Sing a song. Build a shed. Cook a new meal. Do stand up. Something. Anything. That kind shit gets me out of bed every morning. What can life offer me today?

Yes! I’m actually writing a book about stuff like that, my guide to “adulting” lol I’ll try and answer your question as best I can on here and feel free to DM me for any more advice. Maybe you can help with my book =)

I actually have the easiest schedule on earth and I don’t believe in a reward system. Both of those things you mentioned (strict schedules and reward systems) are highly touted in the self help world and I’ve met very few people who manage to have success with it. I make my own hours at work (I’m a lab tech for a private doctor who sees patients once a month. I have one month to get results to him so I come and go as I please. But that’s beside the point cause obviously not everyone can do that).

The reward for me is the process itself. The reason youre depressed (in my opinion obviously I’m an internet stranger that doesn’t know you) is because you’re good at your job and you do it on autopilot. Idk about you but the happiest times in my life are learning new things. I, personally, find energy in enjoying the process of trying something new. And the gym, as weird as it sounds, is what recharges my batteries. I’ve never once gotten home from the gym with less energy than when I went. Of course my muscles are exhausted, but my brain is RACING because it just got an hours worth of extra blood flow and oxygen. Every time I don’t want to go to the gym, I change the mentality in my brain. I always say to myself “just get in the truck and drive there and walk inside. That way you can at least say you went. Plus you like driving around anyways” so I convince my ass to get in the car and drive, not “go to the gym” and once you’re there, well fuck it, you’re there. Get to exercising. Once you’re there, you can use the same process “well just go lift one light weight” and once you do, you have to do more cause you’re into it. Again, this is all my process that I find works for me. Convincing yourself when you’re lying in bed watching TV to go work out is hard, but “get to the car and drive” is easier on your brain lol.

Thanks for such a detailed response! I guess the most depressing thing about trying to do all your work on the computer is no matter how well you do your job, something goes wrong with connectivity, poorly designed programs, or that others did not do their part of the job, so you end up having to repeat everything you thought was done. Neverending emails and others' "what have you done for me lately" attitude every day, with no perks like getting to mess around with coworkers or work with people much at all. But when I feel that way, I feel guilty because I should be glad for any job in these times where so many have lost so much.

You've hit it on the head with lack of new things to learn, which especially includes a stifling lack of fun and creativity. My big fault is that I let boring work take up my time for no reason, out of habit and lack of focus. I took 2 hours to write an email yesterday (on my "day off" ha ha) because I couldn't decide what I wanted to say and I was worried that in my state of mind I might write something that would make me sound like a whiny idiot or that I would regret the language of later.

I do know you're right about just get in the car and go. I make a point to drive to a nice park and take a walk several times a week, and I always feel better afterwards. You would think that would make me want to do it more often! I felt really good the other day when the ash in the sky made the whole day look like night and I gave up trying to work and spent my time doing squats and stair work, and just moving in place. I found it really addictive to the point that I was so tired when I stopped, yet I felt energized at the same time! I'm going to try to do more of that this week. Humans seem to have such a problem with addictive behavior, that getting addicted to something simple good and free like that might be easier than I think!

I definitely understand that about computers. We’re going thru a system change at work and I’ve actually had to be there at odd hours to make sure the transition goes smoothly. It’s horrible lol. That being said, the lack of people is horrible too I know. I’m a bit of a loner by choice. Sometimes not by choice lol. But one of my favorite skills I’ve developed over my life is learning to be ok with being alone. I mean it’s you, your favorite person on earth. If you can’t enjoy your own company, then why should anyone else? I use that time to be creative and read. I also forgot to mention reading. See how you just read my silly little response on the internet and gained a whole new attitude about exercising? There are SO many people much more experienced and smarter and better writers than me who write shit down in books. If you’re ever stuck in a mental rut, pick up a book. Idc how mad or upset or sad or depressed you are, a good book can make you forget all that INSTANTLY. I myself prefer biographies about awesome people who did amazing things and I try and emulate them and their actions as best I can because that’s who I want to be someday. But you can read whatever you want, you can’t tell me Harry Potter won’t put a smile on your face even after the worst day ever.

Don’t feel guilty about having a job. You earned it. Don’t feel guilty about hating it, so does everyone else lol. I’ve worked around 16 jobs since I was 14 all because I hated every single one of them and never stopped applying and doing interviews. I know times are tough, but there is shit out there if you look. One of the biggest mental game changers for me too was viewing the world thru a lens of abundance and not scarcity like the liberals shove down your throat since you were in preschool. If you tell yourself “oh I’m lucky to have a job. No one else has one right now. Times are tough” well then yeah, that’s your world. I look at it like “damn I kicked ass. I managed to keep my job thru these tough times cause I’m a badass. I can get any job I want now because everyone else just got fired so now there is a huge economic vacuum.

Perception is a hell of a drug. If you say something isn’t, you’re right. If you say something is, then you can go for it

I want to write a fiction book grounded in reality. Michael Crichton (RIP) is my favorite author because I admire his style - he worked his own observations and ideas about life into his characters' conversations, and that makes their interactions believable and memorable. He admittedly was not very deft at close personal connections with people in real life, but his writing made me feel close to him. Writing a book that does that for someone seems like a worthy life's accomplishment!

And I’m happy to help! I LOVE writing. I just discovered it during my surgery since I had nothing else to do. Why not try something new? I have two functioning thumbs and a phone, so I’ve just been typing away to anyone who will listen 😂 I compiled a lot of what I told you into some chapters already and I have about 30 pages on Word I’ve typed up since Saturday 😅 it’s a tough world out there and i pretty much retired at age 27 and I just want to help any way I can. I was planning to just give the book away to kids at my local college campus. Let me know if you want a copy when I’m done and I can PM it to you if there’s no character limit 😂. I really would love some feedback!

Keep exercising! Keep walking! And exercise is a never ending process and you even admitted you enjoy the process 😜 so never give it up and you’ll live a long and healthy life and covid won’t stand a chance against your badass immune system and kick ass attitude
