I'm so glad that steam is supporting the shit out of Linux (if it's not on SteamOS - there's tons of games running great on Proton, their WINE fork) - CAN'T FUCKING WAIT TO MAKE THE LEAP!
I'm upgrading from a potato mac mini to an Atari VCS - 4-5x the power for a quarter the price. I'll probably buy another for long-term backup since it's a niche platform to the extreme (who knows if it'll be around 10 years after launch - and I don't upgrade often these days), and while there's dozens of top-tier Linux distros (and hundreds of others and forks) - I'm really looking forward to giving elementaryOS a spin.
Ya the 2020 VCS can run Windows, but where's the fun in THAT?
(honest disclaimer - I do like the look of that new phone of theirs - the two screen tablet hybrid thing - Bill's long gone from Microsoft last I checked ... plus Bing isn't censoring this site.)
Ha! I had my adblock nuke that ages ago so I had no idea they were still virtue signaling that shit. Ah well, corporate fads come and go. Should be gone soon enough. It's coming down everywhere (they're mostly French - with a small office in NYC so they're slow on the uptick - not an uncommon blind spot).
It's not like they gave them any money (they're too lean to waste it - everything is going into the VCS deployment). Unlike some other companies I could mention (ALL OTHER TECH FIRMS).
The old school games 'really' don't hold up (Being realistic - 40 year old titles in 4-8k glory rarely do. That said, I do like some of the indie 2600 scene, there's a DK clone that's insane) - but my steam library is outclassing my current rig to an insane degree. The new VCS can support 2 4k displays with the dual-core Ryzen, and their US-Singapore fabricator launched the first run of 20k units in China but has a factory here in PHX they're thinking of relocating stateside with (the US really needs to step-up the low-fab game, and it will).
Aside from Linux it'll make a great Retroarch play anything platform, steam engine, and KODI / Plex unit for all media.
There's been a lot of drama with a total redesign for the AMD chipset and getting the thing out of the prototype stage (oh man it's been a wild ride), but it's looks to fill my needs nicely. Ya there's better solutions for anyone depending on your requirements - but for fans of mini platforms (me), with expansion options for both internal memory and a tasty M2 SSD slot, there's plenty of headroom to play with for years to come (or develop new titles on - every VCS is developer capable with the Unity tools, and more).
(edit : there's also a rotary function on the classic joystick so FINALLY I can play tempest and breakout properly)
(edit 2 : the site is shilling the most expensive version - it bases at 249.00 (probably get my 'backup' from WalMart) which is all you need since the only difference is a wood panel on the front and memory - which is expandable)
(edit 3 : apologies if this thread got shilly - I really wanted to name drop my linux flavor of choice - but I write fast and overnight is when I do my writing and research so ... um ... oops)

Yeah, sad thing is the vcs looked cool, grew up with those old school games.

Scary content, agreed, but can we at least shout out for the talent of this mural artist? Captured Gates' likeness really well.
It's time to switch to linux boys
