When southern blacks moved north en masse, they brought with them their southern culture - which at the time was a product of specific Scottish groups having immigrated to the south.
The stereotypes that people call racist today were characteristics of the south as a whole back then. Lazy, unmotivated, promiscuous, loud, violent, etc - all used by the north to describe the southerners of the time.
When the southern blacks moved north, the northern blacks were all like "mother fuckers you're going to fuck this up for everyone" and did their best to curb the problems they brought. Black-owned papers published notices trying to lay down some ground rules, call out reprehensible behaviors, and assimilate the new populations.
