In Exodus (2nd book of the Bible) the Jews were in captivity in Egypt. Moses was commanded by God to go to Pharaoh and ask for their release. Pharaoh refused, and God brought down a series of plagues upon Egypt as punishment.
The picture above is referring to the Passover. God commanded the Jews to slaughter a lamb and put the blood on the door frame of their houses. This would mark the families as belonging to God, and He would pass over them as He brought down the last plague, death of the firstborn. Any house that was not marked with the blood of the lamb would lose their first born.
Exodus 12:29 - At midnight the Lord struck down all the firstborn in Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh, who sat on the throne, to the firstborn of the prisoner, who was in the dungeon, and the firstborn of all the livestock as well.
If you watch The Prince of Egypt, it's a great ELI5 version of the story. For full context, read Exodus 12, for even better context read all of Exodus.
Also, my favorite part: Jesus is called the Lamb of God. Once we accept Jesus, we are covered by the Blood of the Lamb. (Romans 8:1 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus...)

There is another excellent illustration of the story (and several others) in the 1956 film The Ten Commandments,
