If you don't listen to the Pope then maybe you shouldn't be Catholic. The Pope is supposed to be the infallible messenger of God for the entire church. If you don't listen to the Pope then you're not a true Catholic, anyway.
The infallibility stuff is pretty recent (we've been around for a while) and not everyone agreed with it then or now. I'd say only a dogmatic minority go for that nonsense.
