Just go for a one-time bombardment drive-by with a ton of jets and raze some of their central government buildings and military targets. Make sure not to harm their Persian cultural heritage stuff or civilians (too much) - there are Iranians who are supportive of the USA and oppose their own government.
Or maybe just assassinate whoever orchestrated their attack and some other people with an elite team. Then retreat, job done, no reason to stay.
Compromise, do both. A precision strike against the planner, the complete eradication of military and governmental buildings with minimal collateral damage.
Also, leaving after that is not called a Retreat. Retreat is what you do when the enemy is overwhelming you and you want to minimize your own losses. Declaring victory and going home is a much different thing.
We need to stop acting like we're friends with the nations who we attack. We're always justified in going there, but we lose our men when we try to land them on the ground and enforce peace. There will NEVER be peace among the sons of Ishmael, EVER. Just so long as they keep their wars amongst themselves, that's fine.
All we need to do is remind them that we can offer them either the peace of non-interference or the peace of the grave.
