Promoting a drug that was made originally for cancer treatment... I’m sure that’s going to be very cheap to produce and probably going to be donated, right? Right?!

Just look at Remdesivir. Gilead is selling it for a 50,000% markup, and it doesn't even work.

Well to be fair, a box of kleenex could get you through a bout of covid unless you are really old with comorbidities.

You mean its not toilet paper? People were going Mad Max with toilet paper for nothing SMH.

Ps. At least that incident had some use, my wife finally admitted that if people are that crazy for toilet paper imagine how crazy they'll be for food. Now she has no more qualms that we own guns.

You're telling me, a few weeks ago I told her I'm going to head over to J&J arms just to brows and maybe pick up ammo, she told me she was going to come along with me that "she might also have shopping to do in the area". Yep, those crazy hoarders fighting over toilet paper and filling pickup trucks full of it really red pilled the hell out of her.

19
NazisWereSocialist 19 points ago +19 / -0

I read something interesting that toilet paper was psychologically an attractive thing for people to hoard because of its physical size, it being large made them feel like they were doing more or more prepared.

16
NvJohansson 16 points ago +16 / -0

Toilet paper should be the least of your priorities in an apocalypse, you can wipe with a leaf but you can't eat the tree.

Lol, I just made that up, it actually sounds like a real quote.

I don't remember the tp, but people would come in and steal it a lot. I do remember the $1000 screws used for hip and knee replacements.

4
ShalomRPh 4 points ago +4 / -0

Some of those don’t even work right. My brother broke his arm last year and had a rod with screws put in. He just had to have another surgery because the screws failed and his arm started swelling up again.

His surgeon says the new screws he put in should be good for anything up to being hit by a truck.

The judge in PA rules Gov. Wolf’s shutdown to be unconstitutional and some of the local news articles have majority comments saying “omg I’m scared for my family”, “they are just trying to save us all!!!” and “we’re all going to die”. These people are truly brainwashed into thinking this is the worst plague to beset mankind. These are the people that frighten me because they are the ones that will turn and vote for firing squads for people who don’t tow the line for “the greater good”.

20
slrpnls 20 points ago +20 / -0

Dude, I know a guy in PA and he was a normal, decent guy. Has a wife and a few kids. Now he's convinced that Chyna Virus is going to kill him and everyone he knows and he's willing to sell everyone's rights along with his own.

23
PromiseImNotASpook 23 points ago +23 / -0

Same. I know a decent amount of people who I had always assumed were rational people just based on my interactions with them. Turns out - all of the media hype, fear-mongering, and brainwashing has permanently ruined them. They really believe that if we don't have a vaccine for this soon that we will all succumb to the CVirus and mankind will end.

I stopped at a Dollar General a few weeks back (in rural Western PA) and there was a young lady who came into the store and did not have a mask on. A man, probably in his mid-to-late 60s came up to her screaming about how she was going to "KILL US ALL!!!". He was literally shrieking at this lady in the middle of the store and started to threaten her. The entire time she was crying and pleading over and over again that she had asthma and anxiety and couldn't wear a mask.

This has to end.

Wait wait.... Is this Covid neutralization, or all coronavirus.... Did Trump just move us forward into neutralizing the common cold?

11
ZeroDeltaTango 11 points ago +12 / -1

Did Trump just move us forward into neutralizing the common cold?

Holy fucking shit

Trump brings and end to global war and human trafficking, creates Middle East peace, cures cancer via Right to Try, cures the common cold via COVID-1984, heals the country's racial divide via prison reform and urban renewal, sends men to Mars, and creates the strongest economy of any nation in world history....while being illegally investigated and wrongfully impeached by the side who actually DID the shit he was investigated and impeached for.

We could have lived a thousand lifetimes and never witnessed a man like this

He's singlehandedly redefining what it means to be an effective, successful human being in service of others in a way no other human has done in the past 2,000 years.

6
DuplexFields 6 points ago +7 / -1

Corona colds, Parvo for dogs maybe too. But we’ve still got the good ol’ rhinovirus to expect yearly.

3
PinochetIsMyHero 3 points ago +4 / -1

If they've found it for one, they can find it for others. If it's a narrowly focused treatment, though, they may have to wait until a "common cold" coronavirus outbreak to look for what would work. And note that only about 40% of "colds" are caused by coronaviruses.

A bigger issue is whether it would be worth it. Medical research isn't cheap. How much are you willing to pay each year to avoid a few days of sniffles?

1
NotTheTendies 1 point ago +1 / -0

In MN we have a mandatory mask policy. Still. My son has to wear one to school. To his part-time job. He is getting a face rash and struggles to breath after several hours masked up. It is not healthy. It makes no sense masking up healthy teens.

8
Friendly_B 8 points ago +8 / -0

Look into "mask mouth."

4
prayinpede 4 points ago +4 / -0

I feel like if i type that in ddg it will give me some intresting results. Can you give a quick run down

8
Friendly_B 8 points ago +10 / -2

Dentists are reporting that people's teeth are rotting at an accelerated rate now due to the moisture and bacteria conditions within a constantly masked mouth. It's named after meth mouth.

5
prayinpede 5 points ago +5 / -0

Meth mouth is from dehydration mostly, right?

2
AngryCanary 2 points ago +2 / -0

Some people have a tendency to breath through their mouth while wearing a mask. Mouth breathing reduces saliva, which is particularly bad if you have periodontal disease. If you have to wear a mask for an extended period of time, breath through your nose and remember to stay hydrated. If breathing through your nose causes your breath to go into your eyes, your mask is not fitted properly.

4
DarkMemeDuck 4 points ago +4 / -0

If that's the case, just pull it down under your nose. No one will give you any crap about it. Since this whole panic is made up anyway, there's no "right way" to wear the stupid thing.

I tried a new church on Sunday and was kicked out of church for not wearing a mask (I left my last two churches this year for promoting BLM). I've been deeply disappointed with my country and the church this year. I cannot find a church that won't promote BLM or require a mask. Apparently that's too much to ask.

2
hansgruber7 2 points ago +2 / -0

Yes, but I believe we are commanded to not give up meeting together as some are in the habit of doing. To me personally, online services don't do that command justice. I was always prepared for persecution, but I was not prepared for the church to so fully become a part of the problem so quickly.

2
SilverStarv5 2 points ago +2 / -0

online services don't do that command justice.

That’s true

I was not prepared for the church to so fully become a part of the problem so quickly.

I like how you worded that. I think this is a indicator of the health of the Church itself (generally speaking). Better to find out how unhealthy it is now then later when it really counts. As long as we actually motivate ourselves to fix it.

Turns out that you can be a dictator in this county if you can make people believe that there’s a disease to be afraid of.

I thought conservative men were Alpha. Take off your masks! I’m a woman. I shouldn’t have to do the fighting on this issue, but it looks like it will have to be me.

19
DoYouBelieveInMAGA 19 points ago +19 / -0

I don't get it either. I'm in SC. I feel like I was seeing more people not wearing them a couple months ago. It feels good NOT wearing one. I had a guy who I can only assume was a Republican start talking to me about the NFL yesterday. As in, it was clear he watched some or all of the games.

I heard somebody say, 'kids are gonna think this is normal" referring to the masks and government control. So I don't wear it not only for myself but so a kid can see publicly somebody not complying with government overreach. Maybe that's silly, but maybe not.

11
Erikabodereka 11 points ago +12 / -1

I’m in SC, too. Just before Best Buy went Level 10 stupid, I had to go in. The table was set up for masks, but I didn’t get one. A man came in with his son behind me and said “Trump better win so we don’t have to do this anymore”. I told him just don’t wear it. He said he was doing it for his son to be a good example. I don’t tell people how to raise their kids, but he really fucked up. He should explain to his kids how individual liberty works and how to be above the influence blah, blah, blah... On a similar note, Joe Wilson, US representative, was shaking hands at our polling station years ago and I had my son, would have been 8ish, with me. My son was excited to meet him and said “I hope I made a good impression on him.” I told him of course he did, but it’s Joe Wilson’s job to make a good impression on us because we are his boss and it’s Joe who has to answer to us not us to him. That’s a long winded way of me saying that it’s not silly to think of children. The masks are creepy.

3
DoYouBelieveInMAGA 3 points ago +3 / -0

I like Joe Wilson. I've sat in on a couple of his town hall phone calls. Good guy.

5
fazaman 5 points ago +5 / -0

I'm in SC, too, but my city has mandated them in any business. I never wore one until the mandate, and don't want to wear one, bit if I don't, all I'm really doing is forcing some poor employee to argue with me, because they have no choice, otherwise the government might start messing with the business. They might not agree, I know I don't agree, but I'm not going to make their day worse because of some stupid mandate that neither of us created or wanted.

I just hope that we can push through legislation to prevent any of this rights destroying bullshit from ever happening again. The lockdowns, the mask mandates... All of it.

4
DoYouBelieveInMAGA 4 points ago +4 / -0

7
you_can_do_it 7 points ago +7 / -0

You are spreading disinformation. More so, even if what you are saying was true it is fictional to suggest the population is largely wearing medical grade masks - they are not.

https://www.theblaze.com/op-ed/horowitz-lied-to-dramatically-about-masks

On April 3, already several weeks into the unprecedented lockdown over coronavirus, but before the big media push for universal masking, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration issued guidance for respiratory protection for workers exposed to people with the virus. It stated clearly what governments had said all along about other forms of airborne contamination, such as smoke inhalation — "Surgical masks and eye protection (e.g., face shields, goggles) were provided as an interim measure to protect against splashes and large droplets (note: surgical masks are not respirators and do not provide protection against aerosol-generating procedures)." https://www.osha.gov/memos/2020-04-03/enforcement-guidance-use-respiratory-protection-equipment-certified-under

This would explain why experience has shown that all of the places with universal mask orders in place for months, such as Japan, Hong Kong, Israel, France, Peru, Philippines, Hawaii, California, and Miami, failed to stave off the spread of the infection. Surgical masks could possibly stop large droplets from those coughing with very evident symptoms, but would not stop the flow of aerosolized airborne particles, certainly not from asymptomatic individuals.

https://www.news-medical.net/health/The-Size-of-SARS-CoV-2-Compared-to-Other-Things.aspx

This is why the CDC, as late as May, was citing the 10 randomized controlled trials that showed "no significant reduction in influenza transmission with the use of face masks."

https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/26/5/19-0994_article#tnF2

6
OranjeBlanjeBlou 6 points ago +6 / -0

This is, of course, assuming the virus is an actual danger we need to care about. That’s the part that’s not true.

Unless we’re caretakers for the elderly and sick, the risk is functionally zero.

5
JackOfDiamonds 5 points ago +5 / -0

No one's suggesting you shouldn't be allowed to wear one if you want. Just don't tell the rest of us what we have to do. The symbol of the mask has become a tool of psychological oppression, a constant, pervasive reminder that we need to live in fear of the boogey man.

3
fazaman 3 points ago +3 / -0

Cloth masks are functional for longer than brief contact, but shorter than long contact.

Short contact (a few minutes), the viral load is too low.

Long contact, the reduction in droplets is too low, so it doesn't matter.

So, for that time in between, the amount of time we rarely deal with people in stores, walking past people, that kinda stuff, they're mostly useless. Being next to someone all day, also useless.

Add in the fact that they cause people to touch their faces more, and that negates more of the benefit.

They protect you in the least common type of contact. If you're in that situation, sure wear one. Otherwise, they're not really helping.

15
rich77 15 points ago +15 / -0

Is there a way to get greed out of healthcare? Ive been pondering banning health insurance. It seems to me to be the root of our healthcare issues. Other insurances make sense because you may or may not need them. Health insurance at some point will be used. It turns it more into a ponzi scheme but this one everyone involved has their hands in everyone's elses pockets. A new top of the line MRI can cost close to 2mil but theres not 2mil worth of metal, plastic, electronics in these. They companies know the hospital will charge health insurance 7k a use and it goes on from there.

4
magastrophysicist 4 points ago +4 / -0

If you are truly a skeptic and have kept your job as a scientist, you are doing quite well. This doesn't apply as much to astrophysics because the field is not human-centered like biology.

But there is a lot of gate-keeping and circle-jerking in astrophysics. I have colleagues (not friends) that have worked on a single system their entire career, mainly because it's their safe space. If they had to produce clever and original ideas to keep their jobs, half would be gone the first week.

I've taken the long road of learning new things in order to remain relevant across a multitude of fields. Probably it has cost me a bit more time, but that's okay.

I would be bored to tears in a "normal" job and it seems all the good data science jobs are held in dictatorial technocratic companies that are playing no small role in the destruction of humanity.

The communists are slowly infiltrating and causing irreparable damage to astrophysics. It's sad. When a large fraction of scientists became godless heathens, the field began its slow descent into degenerate nonsense. I must stay in and fight them with all of my being. That said, if they ever found out I have this account I am certain I would be cancelled immediately.

I view my job as an attempt to unveil a nano-fraction of the beauty of God's creation. Sadly, many have fallen from this ideal and view it as some sort of game or ultimately meaningless exercise in human ego stroking. They could not be further from the truth.

You were right to get out of academia. I try never to feel jealousy, but I must admit I feel it when I hear stories like yours. I think I can navigate my academic career and God-willing, I will be successful. But it's a lonely road. I know three other based astrophysicists, but most are insufferable lefty goons. I try to forgive them, but it is difficult.

To be clear, academia left ME and I don't think I'd have had the guts to have given up tenure ever. That's scary to me. On the other hand, I also had a bit of a problem keeping my mouth shut, especially in faculty meetings, so i don't know if tenure would have protected me these days. Good for you for keeping up the fight, best wishes, and thank you for the detailed reply!

2
magastrophysicist 2 points ago +2 / -0

Thank you! I am worried that one of these days I will say something totally normal (but terribly offensive to them) and be fired, but it hasn't happened yet. It's like working with a bunch of tattle-tale children though.

I do enjoy my job and I am happy to continue working to reveal more of the "secrets" of the universe.

I wish you well in your endeavors as well! Hopefully you are in a place that is not toxic like academia.

In astrophysics, I'd say the demographics are probably 85% lefty, 15% correcty, with a higher percentage of lefties if you slice out all the older folks. The current generation of astronomers is quite lefty.

I don't necessarily have any links to share, but if you spend enough time looking at the websites of different astronomy departments, journals, professional groups, etc. you will find all the Marxist intersectionalism you would never want and more. As a whole, the field is quite white (not that anybody should care, I don't) so the commies love to have meetings and events about "_____ in astronomy" where _____ is your favorite intersectional bullshit (queers, women, people who were previously referred to as black but now must be referred to as POC to avoid the PC police, etc).

Since when does something so shallow like skin color or other factors that you cannot change, like sex, determine how you can solve complex technical problems?

Hint for all the degenerate lefties: those things cannot determine your quality as a scientist.

As a summary, I'd say the field is moving along nicely but the commies are encroaching and soon it'll be impossible to get away from them, much like in the social "sciences."

I believe Stefan Molyneux has pointed out that around 90% of scientists are liberal.

I saved an old article from a post that said 85% were liberal based on it

Seems to line up with my experiences perfectly. Also, Nobel Laureates backing Biden...just, wow. In my time in academia, I have met four Nobel Physics Prize winners and they were all very humble people. I know they are all lefties though.

Sad!

Yup. The problem becomes worse when the based scientists are unable to speak up because they will be cancelled. Some have done it, and basically every one that has was fired.

Not a good feeling. I have to bite my tongue and walk on eggshells around any university. It's absurd.

9

Yep, anybody with a functioning immune system is also producing "100% neutralizing antibodies" when infected by SARS-CoV-2. That is literally what the antibody "test" is for, it is detecting the antibodies a person made in response to the virus!

Coronavirus isn't usually deadly to those who don't have a compromised immune system and aren't elderly, it still can cause complications even in young people though.

THAT'S why people are supposed to wear masks, to protect the vulnerable.

COVID-1984 gives them to much power and it ain't going anywhere for large sections of the world's population anytime soon.

By tomorrow the MSM will say it kills people or some stupid shit. People really have to stop thinking the virus is something the people actually in control of the world want to cure.

Spoiler alert they don't want to cure it and they don't care if you die from it. Just have to pray if you or a loved one gets it you don't get put in a socialist death hospital.

Scientists at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine have isolated “the smallest biological molecule” that “completely and specifically neutralizes” SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.

The antibody component is 10 times smaller than a full-sized antibody, and has been used to create the drug Ab8, shared in the report published by the researchers in the journal Cell on Monday. The drug is seen as a potential preventative against SARS-CoV-2.

“highly effective in preventing and treating” mice and hamsters

An antibody fragment (1/10 of an antibody) that “completely and specifically neutralizes” a virus -- calling it now, this is too good to be true. Also, everything works in mice. If they are only in mice and hamsters, how can they possibly have enough information to back up that claim for specificity?

I hope I'm wrong.

“Ab8 not only has potential as therapy for COVID-19, but it also could be used to keep people from getting SARS-CoV-2 infections,” said co-author John Mellors, chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases at Pitt and UPMC. “Antibodies of larger size have worked against other infectious diseases and have been well tolerated, giving us hope that it could be an effective treatment for patients with COVID-19 and for protection of those who have never had the infection and are not immune.”

Xianglei Liu of Pitt is also co-lead author of the study.

This is great for people with immune systems that are weak enough to need an antibody but are not able to produce it themselves.

For most people the body doesn’t even bother with an antibody because it’s not even much of a threat. The body just rejects it. Done deal.

That's a big relief, that 98.4% chance of survival from covid always scared me. Cardiovascular diseases, or diseases of the heart and blood vessels, are the leading cause of death. However, their prominence is not reflected in our perceptions of death nor in the media.

While the death toll for HIV/AIDS peaked in 2004, it still affects many people today. The disease causes over 2,600 daily deaths on average.

Terrorism and natural disasters cause relatively very few deaths. That said, these numbers can vary from day to day—and year to year—depending on the severity of each individual instance.

Can we find the silver bullet for death, can a computer nerd muster up enough patents to obtain the billions in profits that he lust after?
