And in exchange for lower hourly rates I always ask for a percentage of profits.

Per project it sometimes work out, sometimes doesn't. But as a whole, plus my savings, I could comfortably go a year without working if I wanted to. Or I could work freelance sporadically through the year and work half as much and since I'm single still live comfortably. But I like the benefits and working in an office.
