The NSA is probably the only remotely pro-trump intelligence agency right now, it was an NSA head after all that warned trump of the shenanigans the democrats were pulling right after the election.
The real thing here is if they were iPhones, iMessage will encrypt all the data and even Apple can't decrypt it. Now if they had iCloud backup enabled with iMessage saved, then Apple would have decryption keys (and the NSA most likely would have sniffed them up at this point).

Really I don’t know if they would even use the stellarwind database against the political and social elites. That system was made to be used only against us plebs. That's an odd thing to say considering it was the director of the NSA who sniffed out the FBI/NSD "contractors" snooping around around his databases. Said director then did an investigation with the FISC to conclude the snooping had been going on since November 2015 until mid-April 2016 (when the NSA began a full audit) and that 85% of their searches were illegal.
I know it's popular around here to assume all and sundry are deep state swamp things, but Trump would never have been able to get as far as he has if that were the case. We wouldn't know even 10% of what we know today about the obama admin's election fuckery if that were the case.
If Rogers was one of the only ones who wasn't corrupt at the NSA, there would be no way he would have been able to do a thorough investigation before and after the election.
As for emails, what did you expect the NSA to do? Prosecute? Only the DOJ can do that and Lynch refused. Lisa Page said this during her testimony when asked about charging crooked with criminal negligence...
Like I said yesterday, the only stuff they could have hidden were personal notes and files on the phones, but anything put over internet or SMS is forever.
Even a wipe isn't guaranteed I'd wager. They were probably wiped to NIST800-88 since that's what DoD recommends. BUT I would wager a beer that government agencies have ways of recovering data even from an electronic wipe if there is enough political will to expand the manpower required.
Political will from those in charge, and obedience all the way down the chain to the tech responsible for doing the job. I.e.

Barr doesn’t just write it down on a sticky note and throw it in the trash;
Barr’s lieutenant doesn’t just file the request email in his “to do later” folder, aka the trash folder;
The special supreme supervisory agent douchebag in charge of the techs actually relays the request;
The less than special and definitely not supreme supervisory agent isn’t too busy fucking anything in the office with two legs or on a quest to find a “smoking gun” on a triple amputees phone and issues the actual order to the tech;
Who isn’t too busy breaking into his ex girlfriends phone to see if she really thinks that he’s “a fucking creep and a loser” like she told him when she broke up with him on Facebook.
This is probably a reasonable approximation of what goes on in most of the executive branch for anything Trump is trying to do on behalf of the American people.

Sadly, government comms devices tend to not use commercial wire/band. The NSA may have all of my texts and your texts, but they're not capturing Trump's texts or, for instance, those sent or received by phones used by members of the State Department.

No, I'm telling you that government-owned devices aren't sending SMS via pathways that the NSA bulk gathers, the way all of us peasants do.
The government installs all kinds of key loggers and other bullshit on machines before they issue them out, so the data may be somewhere, but they're not going to get it from the regular NSA database.

This is dumb. They DEFINITELY were not using SMS which is never encrypted, not over the air, not at the telco, not anywhere. They were using iMessage at the worst, but kore likely signal or telegram which is end to end encrypted but then wanted to wipe the device.

So, what will be done about any of this? Another stern letter, or maybe, a stern "don't do that again" or else. Unfortunately this is not true. iPhones sent their messaging traffic over iMessage via Apple servers. They only default to SMS when the other party is not an Apple customer.
So for the majority of intra-team communication (which I'm assuming everyone was using iPhones for this exact reason) none of the conversation would have been captured... unless the NSA has hooks into Apple's own servers which is entirely possible but would either Apple or the NSA admit this?
And given who would benefit, it's very likely that Apple claims their own privacy policy mandates the deletion of iMessage logs when a device is wipes, or after whatever period of time would have conveniently elapsed.
Regardless the intent with wiping is clear: it's a cover-up and destruction of evidence.
