It's impossible to "just fire" federal employees. They have Unions and those Unions have, with the help of legislators, made it almost impossible to fire people working for government.

On the other side opposing them-- NO ONE. Because the people actually paying for their salaries, the taxpayers, have no voice in bargaining with the unions.
