Because I’m proud of my fiancee for serving her community as a first responder? What the fuck is wrong with you...

Remember that when you or someone you love needs to call for help. They are the calm voice reassuring those who are scared. They have to listen and analyse the situation, they need to coordinate fire and police efforts, they need to remain calm and in control no matter what is happening at the other end of your phone.

Oh and many dispatchers work IN police stations, including my fiancee. So yeah, they are in danger when police stations are attached and set on fire. They have to wear a uniform so they are also targets when they leave their job to come home, often in the middle of the night.

I know many people think dispatchers are glorified receptionists but they have a hard job. They have to listen to people commit suicide. They have to listen to distraught family members crying as they watch a loved one suffering a heart attack and die right in front of their eyes. They have to coordinate when a mass shooting happens, or a natural disaster. If I'd had to live through a fraction of what she has I would be a nervous wreck. Oh.. and many do end up with a form of post traumatic stress because it is a HARD job.

The gold line ARE heroes. They might not be out there on the streets but they are an essential service to all of us and your disrespect sickens me. I am going to put it down to ignorance of what the job actually involves rather than any real malice on your part.

Go ask a cop how much they rely on their colleagues on the other end of the radio. See what they have to say.
