I think the Chinese elite would rather damage another country to start with if that was their goal and shift the investigation about Covid-19's origin away from themselves... Sounds like a lab containment accident to me, but I've no doubt they didn't have good plans for their research.

I think it was a lab breach that they in turn used to their fullest advantage once it occurred.
