Those excuses don't work if someone (NSA) has evidence of what you actually did. At that point, asking you about anything is just giving you a chance to explain yourself.
I know there's a whole lot of information here and it's hard for a lot of people to keep up with all of it, but the NSA is actually one of the good guys in our current situation... Not necessarily the organization as a whole, but we definitely have friends there as opposed to a lot of the other alphabet agencies where we don't.
Several of our intelligence community members are at war with each other. We only hear about the top three but there are literally dozens of them with even more power than the main ones and they have been at war with each other behind the scenes for several years now.
We wouldn't have any of the information we have out there right now if it wasn't for them though.

The part that's going to surprise people the most, from every side, is just that... the fact that every side is going to be implicated. There are going to be a ton of very prominent Republicans and Democrats brought down at the same time.
That's why they're going to be able to do it this close to the election without worrying about people legitimately claiming it's political, because it's literally going to be an equal opportunity proverbial executioners axe. There will not be a filter for what's coming and I, for one, hope that it destroys the whole goddamn thing and let the chips fall where they may.
I appreciate and agree with your sentiments, but I'm cynical - past history with Senate committees makes it hard for me to be anything else. I'll be thrilled if this goes anywhere, but I'm keeping my expectations low.
Pleading the 5th is a vague admission that you might have done something wrong... not recalling has no negative optics or repercussions. Every other reason you listed will be used one after the other constantly for days on end.
