Space Force. I want to know more..

Better yet, as a Vet of a certain "Force" how 'bout we take a page out of history:

In the early 1900's zepplins/HABs were primary recon source. Once we developed fixed wing aircraft, we removed all those zepplins and HABs from the arena with the ease of wiping a table top clean. Shouldn't be too difficult to wipe out all that space junk.

Hence the term shoot DOWN. The debris (previously assembled object) will cease to adhere to its previously programmed orbit regime. Geosynchrous or otherwise. In effect, it becomes a nice little meteor shower, completely burning up in the stratosphere. I must be over the tgt, amirite Fong?

1
traveravis 1 point ago +1 / -0

Nah well just vaporize it with our space based directed energy weapons

1
HillaryAteMyBaby 1 point ago +2 / -1

Satellites don't get shot down, they get disabled. Once you disable them, they can't be fixed. Even if you were to blow one up into debris, the debris continues the same orbit around Earth, and should not interfere with other satellites in their own orbits.

2
45willwinagain 2 points ago +2 / -0

Sadly it's not that simple.

We are actually really close to never being able to launch into space again, all it takes is one major fuckup and the debris cloud would envelop the earth and obliterate anything up there and anything trying to get through it.

It's called "the Kessler syndrome"

The only way to handle this would be to send craft up there to grab onto the offending satellites and essentially pile drive them into the earth or fling them into the sun.

Even after taking them down in a non-space junk creating way it's still a major problem that we need to address before it turns everything up there into a prison shell.

This guy is a complete cuck on most subjects but this segment on space junk is pretty informative https://youtu.be/OA9RqYAsQ1A

Foxbat40 -1 points ago +1 / -2

I am a mechanical designer. Thank you. No one is pursuing this technology because it doesn't work the way you think. The energy goes into the soil underground there would be no explosion above ground just a rod shaped hole.

2
45willwinagain 2 points ago +2 / -0

The proposals i've seen are smaller rods than the GI joe movie, and can easily be payloaded into orbit with a satellite for a few extra shekels.

The real problem, a you described, is how you deploy them.

if you maffed correctly, and "shoved" it in the intended direction, you could overcome the relative speed issue and hit a target with it...

The number of orbits till impact and the mass loss on re-entry would all depend on how hard you shoved it but it's not an impossible thing to accomplish it's just not all that practical.

as for targeting you don't need hundreds you just need them to be locked in geo stationary orbit over the area you need to be for your maffs to work to hit the target you designed the thing to hit.

So, in theory, you'd decide ahead of time what your best targets were and pre-position your rod droppers where they need to be to make the longest sniper shot in military history.

Also, i have no idea what the kinetic yield on something like this would be, i think we can safely assume that what we saw in the GI joe movie was hollywoodized to the point of absurdity but assuming it's worth their time to do this whole thing (again maffs dependent) the target area doesn't need to be precise... just get it in the general neighborhood and you've accomplished your goal.

You might not be able to hit the kremlin directly but close enough is fine with something even a fraction of what that silly movie depicts.

2
magaspif 2 points ago +2 / -0

Rods only make sense if you don't have to pay insane energy costs to get them into orbit. and only seem to make sense if you have space craft that can freely navigate in near earth orbits since positioning is so key to the rods. also you would think of it like a saturation/carpet weapon and require a fleet of ships to carry it out. WH40K stuff

1
Vadernocturnus 1 point ago +2 / -1

Yeah, but if we're talking space-force and if UFO guys aren't full of shit...Anti-Gravity tech could make all of this possible.

If the rod was real, then that means other technology to make it happen also exists. That's an interesting conversation.

EMP's - by my limited understanding - are limited in range, as they require a MASSIVE amount of energy to deploy.

I would like to know what kind of "energy" we are talking about. I could see some form of microwaves. Nothing like boiling the internal organs of a bunch of people at once to f up the day's planned activities...

The primary issue is power source. I guess you could have some kind of plutonium or other radioactive power source. Unless tech has come a lot further than I know about (very possible), solar is worthless for weapons-grade use.

OrangeElvis 2 points ago +2 / -0

It should make you extra moist and tender... Best defense would be scooba gear and close proximity to a lake or ocean, lol.

1
45willwinagain 1 point ago +1 / -0

EMP's aren't that complicated... i'd rather not get into it (for obvious reasons) but they aren't that hard for someone to make.

And solar is not "worthless", you can trickle charge batteries and (super) capacitors with it... which is exactly what they are doing.

"Rods from god" don't require any energy to drop... they are literally rods of solid material (tungsten and cobalt are often proposed) that is dropped from orbit onto a target.

It was popularized in the GI joe movie here: https://youtu.be/jOKf5r_JMAo

2
OrangeElvis 2 points ago +2 / -0

Batteries are heavy - at least conventional ones are. I am sure solar is a part if every satellite system. However, this I s all above my education and I am sure there is all kinds if cool shit up there.

Just basic scientific principles lead to my post - and the limitations of what can be schlept up into orbit.

Let the phaser arms race begin

Comments believe they could be related to 'wild fires' too

9
DRKMSTR 9 points ago +9 / -0

Unlikely, lasers in atmosphere lose a heck of a lot of power.

If you fired a laser from space, it would diffract to a point where it would be largely useless.

If they had a laser that could hit the ground with a decent amount of energy, it would require a massive mirror and power to do so. Such a thing is highly unlikely and it would be very obvious as the diffraction would be visible in some cameras / sensors.

3
jive-ass-turkey 3 points ago +3 / -0

Not laser, energy.

There has been a ton of chatter on this is relations to the wild fires on the Chans.

There is a webm going around purportedly showing a DEW starting fires.

I have got to admit that it was pretty convincing and was something I'd never seen before, fwiw.

Extremely coincidental timing to release this considering all the talk about DEWs on the Chans the last couple of weeks.

Didn't put much stock in the DEW wild fire theory, before this announcement that is.

Makes me think the evidence I saw was authentic and this official release is meant to make it seem like those attacks were from a foreign actor's satellite.

Call me crazy, but IMO, this release actually lends more credence to the theory the fires may have been started by our own DEWs and this is just to try and blame another country and run cover for the evidence the letter agencies know is already in the public sphere.

1
DRKMSTR 1 point ago +1 / -0

Regardless, you're still dealing with atmospheric issues. The array size necessary to impact surface 'targets' is ridiculously high and the leakage (detectable radiation in various EM spectrums) would be obvious.

It costs far less and is less obvious to get people to set fires.

DEW's have not yet been used on surface 'targets' in relation to the fires.

1
45willwinagain 1 point ago +1 / -0

Something to consider...

https://youtu.be/CRPKPJR1k5Q?t=19

also super capacitors being trickle charged with solar is a thing...

2
DRKMSTR 2 points ago +2 / -0

I don't think you understand the power requirement. Current ground based and air based lasers require massive power systems.

Also I saw the source footage, it's doctored.

There's no DEW on earth (or in space) with that capability.

And I'd bet the farm on that, gladly.

1
45willwinagain 1 point ago +1 / -0

Before we start making wagers...

Here's Lockheed Martin bragging about their DEW weapons platforms: https://youtu.be/jMx1-yaRLyQ

Including drone based DEW's.

We live in the future.

edit: just curious where the "doctored" claims comes from, not talking shit for real want to know.

2
DRKMSTR 2 points ago +2 / -0

I am well aware of the lockheed systems.

They are not capable of the necessary power requirements to cut through the atmosphere. It would required technology a decade or more ahead of that.

Their systems are range limited to a mile or two due to the diffraction in the atmosphere.

Above a certain power levels you will literally ionize the air causing visible spikes of plasma.

If it were from a satellite, the autists from 4chan would have used the timestamp to identify the satellite.

Also if it was from a satellite, why doesn't the beam move?

Lastly, if it was a DEW then some country is decade(s) ahead of us in multiple domains, including internal infiltration because we would have identified and retaliated almost instantaneously.

1
45willwinagain 1 point ago +1 / -0

My point in sharing that lockheed link wasn't delivered as intended. I guess the best way to rephrase that would be "if this is what they admit to having on youtube, what do we actually have that they aren't telling us about".

That beam does walk a bit... easier to see if you focus on the fire it was "targeting".

Thats actually my biggest problem with that whole video, why would you bother exposing yourself shooting lasers to start fires... on a fire thats already raging?

That was the only real problem i had with it.

The only explanation i could figure is using the fire as cover to target something specific which they hit once the fire was going... but that would mean the "beam" would have to also shoot through all that smoke.

Nothing makes sense about this whole thing quite frankly.

But that video doesn't have to be space based (and after hearing your questions about atmospheric diffraction i am questioning it more) it could be from a plane or a drone.

What i don't understand is if you go to the gov website on that date and time you can still see where the red heat "laser" is... but it's been covered up with a black line.

Why would they go so far out of the way to blacken out the "beam" on the websites history?

Anyway military tech has always been much more advanced in "private" than in public. And after watching that ticktac video and rogans interview with cmdr Fraber... i wouldn't put it past our military to have advanced tech, and therefore i would not be shocked to learn that people like obama sold those secrets out to other countries (china especially).

2
DRKMSTR 2 points ago +2 / -0

I understand where we say we're at vs where we are truly at (within a few years of development). What they aren't telling us about is not Space to earth DEW's, they'd have to be mad-scientist level crazy, there are more efficient ways to do that.

That could simply be the fire shifting. I'm guessing the "beam" is an artifact in either the hardware or software and/or a reflection somewhere, it's just convenient enough to cause conspiracy theories.

Absolutely, it could be from a plane or drone, the only issue is the length of the beam and the spread of the beam. From any technology now and in the future, it's infeasible.

The black line could be a way to cover / reduce an artifact / outlier.

Typically current 'top tech' is not "SUPER LASER / MEGABOMB" type stuff, it's typically a lot of smaller systems. If you see 1 (Insert system here....anti-air) we typically have 2-4+ of similar systems and then some. If someone launches a nuke at the USA, there's likely a whole myriad of layered defense solutions.

Lastly, we monitor every foreign military satellite, if this happened, we would have shown that evidence to the world and declared war. That would be almost on par with randomly Nuking a country. Space warfare is messy and the greatest threat to the world, any evidence proving someone used a weapon from a satellite against a different country, there would be a world war.

They are aimed at our satellites, in years gone by the first attack would start with an air attack, now it is a space attack. If you can blind or destroy our satellites then we lose what is called the "kill chain". Our smart weapons simply can't work without that kill chain.

This is a topic I am seriously interested in, it worries me and I hope we are making serious moves to not only defend our space assets from these attacks but to go on the offence.

2

I think the video is fine. The detail I’m quibbling over is satellites being weaponized with directed energy technology.

The satellites and directed energy weapons are separate things.

1
p8riot 1 point ago +1 / -0

"Satellites" are just orbiters of Earth. The claim I think is that these orbiting beacons, or at least some of them, are now being used as vessels for weapons.

3
Proud_American 3 points ago +3 / -0

Nope, he says they’re using satellites and directed energy weapons. Not one in the same.

It’s nothing we didn’t know already.

1
45willwinagain 1 point ago +1 / -0

Are they though?

https://youtu.be/CRPKPJR1k5Q?t=19

If you go to the gov website that video came from, the beam is still "there" but it's been edited out with a black line to cover the beam.

However there is one huge hole in the theory, why would they "DEW" an already raging fire... unless they had a specific target they wanted to make sure got wrecked and used the fire as cover.

There is for sure some sort of fuckery afoot, no clue which flavor of fuckery it is though... but this DoD announcement sure does spice things up.

No, they can not. The amount of energy required to keep a coherent laser beam hot enough to ignite the grass from SPACE would be tremendous. You'd need a nuclear submarine up in orbit and I dont know if even that would be enough. The atmosphere would suck up most of the beam before it even hit the ground. It'd be easier to set up orbital mirrors to reflect and direct sunlight than use lasers.

I assure you we have overwhelmingly powerful deterrents in space to counter anything they think about doing.

Also, in the 1990’s we sent up one Hubble telescope for science usage - and many different versions for the NSA that pointed at the Earth! Fun fact - the reason why the first space Hubble was blurry is that they sent up the wrong optics package - it was designed to point to earth not outer space!! So they had to go up and fix that. Woopsie!
