I recall some state where the candidate actually died shortly before the election. I think it was in AZ. They didn't have time to update the ballots so his name remained on the ballot. People still voted for him if I recall.
Happened in Missouri in 2000 too. Me Carnahan was running for Senate against John Ashcroft and died before the election. The Governor made it clear he would appoint Carnahan’s wife if Mel Won the election. Ashcroft (narrowly, I believed) lost and ended up as Bush’s AG.
For the presidency it doesn't matter, all you're doing is voting for your state electors in the Electoral College. Even if it's a state that tries to bind them to the party nominee, the party can nominate whoever.
