Yes there is a difference between .22LR and 5.56/.223 -- 5.56/.223 has more speed and mass. Nonetheless, people out there who scoff at .22 caliber, calling it no more dangerous than BB pellets...are not really telling the truth, and leading a lot of first time gun owners (especially smaller women) away from a very user friendly caliber that is probably some of the cheapest ammo to boot (aka. the perfect thing to learn on).
We have a .22 rifle and handgun that are our kids' first learner guns -- and to be honest, I like shooting them myself. And in a pinch they're capable -- just have to know how to use it.

Then we went to the local gun store and I told her to pick out whatever stripped lower you want. She went with the Spikes Tactical with the unicorn and snowflake with the safety settings as safe space, triggered and full libtard. Still waiting for the handstop and ejection port cover that says "Surprise Asshole" when it opens. Then we are going to paint it. Also it is a PSA 7.5" upper. Really nice and lite.

I have both, and find the mini-14 far easier to maintain. The propellant gasses don't flood the bolt area when it cycles, keeping everything cleaner.
Not nearly as many doodads for it though!

The mini 14 is a great truck/varmint gun. Not something I would carry into battle.
Their main problem is that they're heavy as all get out. I have a 30 and it weighs as much as 2-3 decent-quality ARs.
