The propellant gasses don't flood the bolt area when it cycles, keeping everything cleaner. The mini 14 is a great truck/varmint gun. Not something I would carry into battle.
Their main problem is that they're heavy as all get out. I have a 30 and it weighs as much as 2-3 decent-quality ARs.
