change the password to your modem. the default is usually username "admine" password "admine" easy way in to peoples home networking is through the modem and grabbing data packs with credit card info as they go in or out. no need to break in if they get it at the mailbox. can also do what you described.
What you are describing is known as a man-in-the-middle attack. Credit cards 'should' be safe from that as most sites use https (encrypted) for such transactions, however the attacker can still get a list of sites you visit and when you visited them.

There are a bunch of bots on here today posting comments that say: “you hit this nail on the head did you see this?” With a link to that scam. Deport them when you see them.
