I can only think that it's a sunken cost fallacy for these people. They're well aware of just how much they've fucked up their lives, their future, and their society by locking themselves in their home and hiding under their bed from the flu. They also know, in the back of their mind, that it isn't all that deadly/dangerous. That they didn't need to do what they did and they'll be feeling the consequences for a decade or more.
NO! This couldn't have all been for nothing! They need it to be a world-ending extinction-level event to justify, in their minds, that burning down society was actually necessary, that the social media attention they got for wearing a mask or sitting on their ass was because they were a good person and not a sheep. Whether they want to or not, they know that it isn't all that serious, but they want it to be so bad. They need it to be. They just can't admit to themselves that they were wrong, and that the people who did actually leave their house without a mask and live their lives were right. Can't have that, so let's double down on restrictions and lock down and virtue signal even harder until we have that magical vaccine that we ruined the entire year for.

In the deep blue communist state of Connecticut, I am seeing more and more of these Karen’s who have been hiding in their house, admitting they didn’t even take a walk like they used to because they wanted to protect everyone from getting Covid in they were being a responsible citizen by doing so, etc. Starting to practically beg For a vaccine ASAP so they can get back to normal.
That fits perfectly with what you have described, they refuse to admit, and they will never admit it was not nearly as bad as they have made it out to be a continue to say how horrible it is and social media every day. They Will never admit that back in March or so they got scared and said I’ll stay inside for two weeks, and buy all the toilet paper, and then it’ll go back to normal, but then when the media kept scaring them they kept getting deeper and deeper into the rabbit hole of fear.
I honestly believe this people will have some form of PTSD or mental health issues once all this is done. I don’t know if they’ll ever be “normal” again. They have spent almost an entire year at this point being scared of their fellow citizens in thinking all the ways their fellow citizens actions will kill With this mysterious scary virus.

Sunken colts fallacy is one of the absolutes of life. People will continue to do anything if they feel stopping means it was all wasted. Breaking that mentality in every aspect of your life is truly freeing!
Its why people finish bad books they are reading, and bad movies etc and stay in horrible relationships and a million other irrational things, business is overflowing with it as well as governments (billions into highspeed rails to no where etcetcetc)
