Local newspapers claim he's safer in the jail while waiting for his family to get a lawyer and then do the extradition. There were mobs in his Illinois town and in Kenosha demanding Kyle be killed while being held. I guess they are hoping the waiting game will give time for "peaceful protesters" to focus on something else. I don't believe that bullshit, but that's what is being said.
AFAIK, there wasn't really anything that happened in his hometown. They were worried about it though, but I don't believe anything materialized. I live somewhat nearby.

from what I know the prison population does not like them in general, leading to them getting placed in protective custody, instead of general population. where they cannot do anything but sit in a cell 23 hours a day, 1 hour for exercise and shower (both protected) or something along these lines.
this leads to them not having any further issues in prison, so they get out on "good behavior" because they were literally protected by prison staff
