but honestly, what I see happening is eventually there will be a big push for online school and I am not talking government run. Why the hell do I need to go to a college to learn about history and many other subjects? There should be online courses that are free and high quality. Self-study being the primary method of advancement for the student. Maybe have proctored exams by going to prometric to get credit. Once you complete a certain series of courses you can get a certificate or more formal degree. For stuff that requires in-person work then what you can do is have it where most of the theory stuff is self-studied and then you apply for an in-person program that is only 6 months. That would save an immense amount of money for students.
The VAST MAJORITY of subjects are what I would call textbook subjects where you can just self-study it - computer science, engineering, math, chemistry, history etc. The ones that do require some in-person courses they can still be made more efficient using the method I describe. Think about something like nursing. You can self-study all the course for 2-3 years then apply for a 6 month program where you learn how to administer a shot, deliver a baby, give CPR and other nursing sills like that.
Without CCPvirus lockdowns, at least HS should have drastically changed over a decade ago. Many problems can be reduced by allowing students to work at their own pace. Typically kids get a week's worth of work done in a few hours.

I had many different history teachers back in the late 80's early 90's... but i only remember learning anything from 2 of them. both of them knew how to make history come alive by getting us all interested in the story... to really understand how amazing and brilliant our forefathers were. Not just what they did... but WHY they did it... how they saw failures in other systems and used those lessons to form what many take for granted these days.
History should be the highlight of the kids day... it should be the one class they love going to even if all the other classes suck.
One of those two teachers i had, was a vet, and he brought friends in from the VFW to talk to us every once in a while. They would tell us stories, not about war or death... but about the reasons they served and why it was so important for us to love and value our country. They helped me appreciate the opportunities we have been given.

We did focus on the founding era, and the colonial era though. I grew up in one of the 13 colonies, and got so sick of hearing about it. What makes history interesting to me is what was going on at the same time around the world, how different people developed differently etc.
I got a really solid foundation on who our founding Fathers were though. As well as the motivations of people who lived through the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, passed down through generations. Much more significant to learn than memorizing names and dates.
Every County seat maintains a law library that has all Congressional records going back to Ben Franklin. What these guys wrote and said should be a much bigger part of education.

I teach, and not only do we say the American Pledge of Allegiance, but we also say the Texas Pledge of Allegiance, and kids have to know and understand the meaning of the words. They are actually tested on them in 5th grade.
That's the way it was when I went to school. We were taught to revere the Constitution and admire our Founding Fathers. Had to memorize and recite Patrick Henry's speech ending in "give me liberty or give me death."
I say this as someone who went to both public and private schools. It was the same in both.

You may enjoy this family story. My brother was born in Texas but moved to a different state early on. When he was in elementary school, he wouldn't stand for the Pledge of Allegiance. but honestly, what I see happening is eventually there will be a big push for online school and I am not talking government run. Why the hell do I need to go to a college to learn about history and many other subjects? There should be online courses that are free and high quality. Self-study being the primary method of advancement for the student. Maybe have proctored exams by going to prometric to get credit. Once you complete a certain series of courses you can get a certificate or more formal degree. For stuff that requires in-person work then what you can do is have it where most of the theory stuff is self-studied and then you apply for an in-person program that is only 6 months. That would save an immense amount of money for students.
The VAST MAJORITY of subjects are what I would call textbook subjects where you can just self-study it - computer science, engineering, math, chemistry, history etc. The ones that do require some in-person courses they can still be made more efficient using the method I describe. Think about something like nursing. You can self-study all the course for 2-3 years then apply for a 6 month program where you learn how to administer a shot, deliver a baby, give CPR and other nursing sills like that.

Without CCPvirus lockdowns, at least HS should have drastically changed over a decade ago. Many problems can be reduced by allowing students to work at their own pace. Typically kids get a week's worth of work done in a few hours.
All the worries about social ostracization are bs. We still need the facility for testing, labs, PE, music, sports, and whatever else I've left out. Students will probably perform poorly in subjects they hate. Some students will perform poorly without the structured classroom setting. So you reduce the school population at any given time by probably well over a third, which plays well to the crowd that's paranoid about spread of communicable disease. Meanwhile everything else improves drastically. At the College level this is true even moreso.

I really think it's the education system.
From a young age, you're told what to do, what to think, how to act... When you fail, you're harshly punished. When someone is able to parrot the teacher, they are incredibly rewarded. Success is easy - just remember what you're told.
There is no psychological safety net to fail. People don't want to fail, they want a plan. They want someone to tell them what to do. They want easy success.
But success isn't easy a lot of the time.

I had many different history teachers back in the late 80's early 90's... but i only remember learning anything from 2 of them. both of them knew how to make history come alive by getting us all interested in the story... to really understand how amazing and brilliant our forefathers were. Not just what they did... but WHY they did it... how they saw failures in other systems and used those lessons to form what many take for granted these days.
History should be the highlight of the kids day... it should be the one class they love going to even if all the other classes suck.

One of those two teachers i had, was a vet, and he brought friends in from the VFW to talk to us every once in a while. They would tell us stories, not about war or death... but about the reasons they served and why it was so important for us to love and value our country. They helped me appreciate the opportunities we have been given.

We did focus on the founding era, and the colonial era though. I grew up in one of the 13 colonies, and got so sick of hearing about it. What makes history interesting to me is what was going on at the same time around the world, how different people developed differently etc.
I got a really solid foundation on who our founding Fathers were though. As well as the motivations of people who lived through the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, passed down through generations. Much more significant to learn than memorizing names and dates.
Every County seat maintains a law library that has all Congressional records going back to Ben Franklin. What these guys wrote and said should be a much bigger part of education.

Growing up, ignorant to most things political, the "patriotic" sense felt much like celebrating your bullies, or being proud of people who don't care for you at all. It seemed a bit pathetic then to make such a fuss about it if you weren't "part of the club". It didn't go far as hate, rather just indifference.
Thankfully, our great President has shaken things up so much. There's several sinister reasons for the aforementioned feelings, but the reality of our country, our values, our traditions, our history, is like a breathe of fresh air to sincerely appreciate. There's a lot to be proud of, and children need to know.
We deserve it all and more. We're the best Country on the face of the earth. We'll never accept anything less ever again.
