Notice it was right before his partner arrived that he started going for it. Dindu probably figured once the partner got there they would find the gun and he'd be off to prison. Most dangerous time for a cop is the point when a suspect thinks it's his last chance (e.g. about to be handcuffed).
Makes me think he didn't notice the guy arrive, that was on the passenger side of the car. But once he was digging it out, there was no turning back...he'd dug his grave.
That was the moment when the Wendy's drive-through drunk fella, changed the course of that interaction. Was peaceful, until they were cuffing him, when he sprang, grabbed the taser, and ran.
