I graduated in 2005 in Oklahoma. I can Verify that yes, my education became more and more liberal the older I got.
From 1992-1997 Elementary, our teachers all mostly still loved to teach. We said the pledge every day and learned basic patriotic history. I experienced the Oklahoma City Bombing during this time and felt a huge wave of patriotism as a child.
From 1998-2001 Middle school, our teachers were hit or miss with loving or hating their jobs. We said the pledge in home room 6th grade and beyond that we said it once in a blue moon at important assembly's. We focused a lot on not bullying and In the 8th grade I was forced to attend a "Girl Power" field trip with a selected group of other girls. It was a conference for young women to help us feel empowered. I didn't respond well to the Girl Power conference, told my counselor I thought it was a waste of time. I was later sent to a "scared straight" style field trip with a group of "troubled" girls to a women's prison. (I was overall a good student. Never got in trouble and C to B Average grades.)
Towards the end of 8th grade I remember having to sit through an assembly called "face value". At one point I was forced on stage with a large number of other random students and we were required to "judge" people in a a paused video at face value (step forward if you feel they look like they are contributing members of society, step back if you feel they are not) it was all about learning not to pre-judge people.
2001-2005 High School. All but two of my teachers seemed to hate teaching. Complained non stop that they didn't get paid enough. And generally didn't care about the students. I was a freshman during 9/11 so we were very patriotic freshman year. Saying the pledge again the first class of every school day. But then after freshman year we didn't do that anymore. I remember disagreeing with my teachers about a lot of things. I was very vocal but only pushed issues when I knew we were being manipulated.
2003 our science teacher, an elderly black woman began showing favoritism towards the non-white students. We NEVER cracked a book in that class, we NEVER did assignments other than reading printouts out-loud daily (we all took turns to read different paragraph in a row) and we NEVER had homework in the class. We all did the same exact work and our grade was 100% class participation. My best friend was in the class and was mixed race. She had an A and I had a C. We started realizing all of the white students had C's. With my best friend's support I called the teacher out on this one day in class. The teacher sent me to the office and I was required to participate in an anger management group hosted by a school counselor.
During the 2004 election my English teacher tried to talk politics with us. She began bashing Republicans and I asked her what any of this had to do with English and...if she was drunk. Instead of sending me to the office she pulled my desk out into the hall. Every day until the end of the school year I sat in the hall. I was no longer welcome in her classroom.
2005 in my US Government class I got into an argument with my teacher about something he was teaching us. I honestly can't remember what it was, but I KNOW it had something to do with him trying to teach an opinion as fact, Because I remember saying repeatedly "if it's true then show me where it says that!" (In the textbook) He knew my father was at home and in the middle of the class asked me if I wanted him to call my dad (I wasn't aggressive or out of control. I was angry and standing my ground) I walked up to the phone at his desk handed it to him and said "I'll dial it for you". I was transferred out of his class unwillingly.
When I started driving, I spent less and less time at school. It was a joke to me. I graduated no problem and barely went. It wasn't long ago that I found my senior year report card. I noticed that it said I took Gym, got an A and had "great attendance". I Never stepped foot in the gym, didn't even realize I had Gym senior year and the name of the teacher was so unfamiliar to me I had to I look them up in the yearbook only to realize I had never seen them before. The school was essentially just marking me as being in attendance for the money per head count they received. I truly believe my teachers were willing to blindly pass me each year to get rid me because I was not "teachable". I wasn't buying the things they were trying to sell.
It's not enough to agree and post, we need to register others including ourselves!
Make sure that we are getting conservatives to register to vote and Democrats that are switching parties!
