There was an article in the past few days about an Illinois judge that wasn't endorsed by the Democrats for re-election, since he was the one that ordered a special prosecutor to investigate Smollett's "this is MAGA country!" scam after the DA dropped it.
The judge said that he could live with that, but he thought it was suspicious when someone sent email to the secretary of state, claiming to be him and that he wanted to withdraw from the race.
You might know that "won their court case" is based on a real-life event. The movie was filmed only 2 years after "those bums" won at the SCOTUS (ironically, represented by the ACLU), and were written into the movie as one of several sets of villains chasing Jake and Elwood.
