Speak slowly, and use short sentences. Whenever possible, use monosyllabic words or grunts, so as not to anger them in their confusion.

It's cumbersome, but perhaps carry pictures with you, using bright colors and simple imagery. If you're really dedicated to the cause, make a pop up book. There's some tutorials online to help you get started.
