Old school tradition like when neighbors didn't ask each other their political affiliation. It was a much saner time back then.
It is kind of rude. I personally don't mind, but some do.
Some are embarrassed that they don't make enough, some that they make too much compared to their friends.
Scammers and thieves also like to know you are worth their time, so it is not a good idea to telegraph.
