Many register as independents but typically vote Democratic. Those independents — especially recently arrived Spanish-speakers — are seen as more up for grabs because they’re less tied to U.S. political parties and are more likely than longtime voters to be influenced by mainstream news outlets and social media.

Can someone please explain to me why "recently arrived Spanish-speakers" would be voting in our elections?

Depends on their definition of recently arrived. If it's 1-5 years it's too early. If it's 10 they're probably citizens and can vote. Only exception is Puertoricans who are American citizens by birth.
