Slaves cost between $35,000-$70,000 in today's money. In "Black Rednecks and White Liberals", Thomas Sowell breaks down a lot of myths about slavery in the US. The fantasy about slave masters arbitrarily maiming and killing slaves doesn't make any sense, when you think of slavery in economic terms (obviously there were isolated incidents like that but it wasn't the norm).
Someone who just put his house/farm down as collateral to secure a loan from the bank to purchase a slave to perform work, wasn't going to arbitrarily kill him. Slaves brought to the Americas were EXISTING slaves in Africa.
I'm not saying slavery was good, but if you anchored an ocean liner off of the coast of West Africa, with a sign that read "Free Slave Ship to America", it would capsize from over capacity.
