He can, but they will mobilize in order to defend that seat. Take the seat out of play and you take away their ability to use it as a carrot to mobilize their voter base.
You and I disagree on whether this is the right thing strategically. I think getting it done as soon as possible takes away a campaign strategy from the DNC, and if we do it quickly enough, you can let the anger subside a little prior to election day.
