The faults of our brothers, we write upon the sands, their virtues on tablets of love and memory.

— Elks motto

You're not wrong, but a too-brief statement from POTUS would be perceived as a snub. And any public criticism of the recently deceased is tacky for multiple reasons.* As usual, Trump is doing it 100% right.

(*) We're free to think what we like personally, of course.

I didn't say he should criticize her at this sensitive time. I said he didn't need to go overboard with flowery praise. Just being honest. You can give condolences in a way that is classy and appropriate, that might include even "measured" praise about someone's career without lavishing compliments or glowing testimonials on them. It's like ideological whiplash for a person's supporters when you say how "great" they were, or lavish praise on a hardcore political enemy of everything you stand for. It smells inauthentic and it also makes the person look like a boob, fawning over someone who hated him.
