Even if they did, they would raise their fists in the air and curse God.

Revelations 16:10-11 The fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast, and its kingdom was plunged into darkness. People gnawed their tongues in agony and cursed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, but they refused to repent of what they had done.

You kind of get a sense of how Jeremiah must've felt.

Tell me about it! I read Jeremiah and it felt like dejavu with everything happening in 2020. Crazy times! I guess there is some solace in knowing we aren’t the first generation to experience this.

Sorry for the late response! The entire book of Jeremiah is basically recapping how Israel (as a nation) forsook God and did not follow God's ways, and brought calamity to their own nation.

The book of Jeremiah is an "end of empire" kind of book, and the types of things that the people did, said, believed, mirrors what's happening in the U.S.A.

It talks a lot about the coming judgement of God, IE: letting their the evil deeds and the consequences of it - catch up. It highlights the moral decay of a society, and internal rot, and how God's hands no longer protected them.

Some of the things Israel had done was that there was rampant greed, corruption, worshipping of idols (modern equivalent could be the idolization of people, places, things above God), child sacrifice to idols (modern equivalent here would be to abort your own children for prosperity/easier life/more riches, wealth, income. Ancient peoples sacrificed their children for prosperity, but modern people abort their children for the same reasons - it's the same spirit essentially, IE: kids are a burden and we care more about having a comfortable life instead of the value of life), adultery of all kinds, oppressing the poor and weak, lying, cheating, stealing, lack of justice (even those who are suppose to deliver justice took bribes). Israel also found God's word offensive - that's a huge parallel right now in 2020.

Therefore, God warns them that there are no more blessings, no more protection from their enemies (neighboring nations who want to overtake them). During that time, Israel was a powerful nation, but they slowly descended into chaos. God sends Jeremiah to warn them to turn away from their wicked ways. This right before they went into captivity from the Babylonian empire by Nebuchadnezzar. God warns them not to rely on Egypt to save them, but Israel didn't listen. They ran to the Egyptians for protection but Egypt lost to the Babylonians, went into captivity right before the Babylonians came for Jerusalem and sieged Israel.

There are so many parallels here because the U.S.A. also has powerful enemies, namely China who is steadily growing and about to overtake the world (much like the Babylonian empire) right as the U.S.A. is slowly descending into chaos.

I'll copy pasta some chapters here for easy read, there are plenty of chapters that say much more about God's judgement, but I'm going to cherry pick some for you - hope this answers your question fren: Jeremiah 5:25-30 25 Your wrongdoings have kept these away; your sins have deprived you of good. 26 “Among my people are the wicked who lie in wait like men who snare birds and like those who set traps to catch people. 27 Like cages full of birds, their houses are full of deceit; they have become rich and powerful 28 and have grown fat and sleek. Their evil deeds have no limit; they do not seek justice. They do not promote the case of the fatherless; they do not defend the just cause of the poor. 29 Should I not punish them for this?” declares the Lord. “Should I not avenge myself on such a nation as this? 30 “A horrible and shocking thing has happened in the land:

Jeremiah 6:10 To whom can I speak and give warning? Who will listen to me? Their ears are closed[a] so they cannot hear. The word of the Lord is offensive to them; they find no pleasure in it.

Jeremiah 6:13-15 “From the least to the greatest, all are greedy for gain; prophets and priests alike, all practice deceit. They dress the wound of my people as though it were not serious. ‘Peace, peace,’ they say, when there is no peace. Are they ashamed of their detestable conduct? No, they have no shame at all; they do not even know how to blush. So they will fall among the fallen; they will be brought down when I punish them,” says the Lord.

Ecclesiastes 1:9

So true. The Lord has the patience of a God. I can't imagine watching humanity circle this mountain, generation after generation. I would lose my patience, but I guess every generation must learn the same lessons over and over again.
