Representatives are suppose to represent the districts that elected them, not the party. Elected representatives are obligated to represent everyone regardless of their party affiliation. That's what's wrong in our country today.
Nah, political parties are a good way to give people an idea about a candidate without spending hours reading about them. Party unity is fine, but two political parties are nowhere near enough to actually represent the entire country.
The solution is to change out voting system so that a third party actually has a chance of getting elected.

Parties are just ways to form coalitions before the general election. Republicans are the coalition of the more "right-leaving" groups, while Democrats are the coalition of the more "left-leaning" groups. Don't expect to much from national coalitions.

In some countries, yes. It's called party defection, but I'm having a difficult time finding rules for U.S. House/Senate. Members can be expelled for "disruptive behavior", which can be interpreted in many ways. In our system, I believe that offending members are simply put to a vote where a 2/3 majority can expel them from Congress.
Regarding individual parties, the chairman of the party can conduct a vote to expel them from the party.
Republican is closer to classical liberal because most are willing to think on their own and disagree to the point of having no cohesion. Because they all have values and don't want to cooperate at a compromise of their values.
